Mission: Transision mission: mafia town Season 3, mission #0
MISSION INFORMATION
This is the out of character mission information and RP Notes for the zero mission for season three! This is how we finally kick off the new season.
Roleplaying's kind of light, but we did manage to get several of our first bios up during roleplaying. The last time we kicked off a new mission was about 13 months before this one, and the one before that was just under three years before that, so I had a lot to cover in the notice as you'll see.

Alys and Wildfall's final co-write

Ten and a half years after our first ever Rollover posted, it's finally time to start up Season three!

This is kind of long. I can't help it. Lots to cover.

First, a reminder: Even if you've played AIL in the past, we need a Season 3 bio from you. It's the first time I've updated our bio sheet, so I want to get everyone using it rather than our old bios. Look at it as a chance to update them, too! Get in touch with me if you have questions or want help with it.

I need to do my new bios soon, too.

Moving on to this mission. This is an untraditional mission. I'm offering two ways to go about it. We're introducing the idea of marking roleplays by their intent.

If a roleplay focuses on one particular approach to the mission (Council or underground), it should be marked. Roleplays don't need to be marked if they're not focusing on pursuing one of the two goals. However, the voter and I will be using the quality and quantity of marked roleplays to 'weigh' how we play the two sides out in the Finale and what happens.

This is not a split mission. There's one winner and one pool of points. More on that later. More on the Somber Six and other enforcers as well.

You're not required to stick with the team you initially pick although the story is set up to discourage switching back and forth too much.

For convenience, I've set up NPC's that your character(s) can meet with to get tasks, advance the story and get information and promises of rewards. You don't have to use them although it's encouraged. The story might run smoother if we can write everyone going through one side of the other.

Read below for details on each operation.

Option One) Co-Op: Work with the Council and the Penguins.

The Council has established a 'working relationship' with the Penguins, who currently control Seaside Town. The two sides will work together to investigate and close the portals plaguing the Kingdom, especially Seaside Town. The Adventurers working with the Penguins start by meeting them or the council to get a pass to go into the city, so this is good if you're on the other task and want to slip in. However, they'll be closely monitored and expected to work closely with the Penguin Mafia. Plus it's possible you could get busted as a 'fake' helper if you're not careful. That would be bad.

The Mafia say they are focused on closing the portals, but you might dig up some dirt on them as you investigate. Just remember, they're actively avoiding you getting information. We don't know for sure if they have an ulterior motive, and they're very good at hiding their tracks. Still, the players have the right to influence the mission. However, please avoid going about "discovering the ultimate plan," especially right off. If you find evidence, it should probably be inconclusive and suggestive rather than decisive.

Feel free to use the Penguins to assign you other tasks if you want. I'm very fond of having a toy charity drive for the local children, the ones who are still in the city. Or they might ask you for something they personally want. Whatever task fits your character, go with it.

The point of this mission is you don't fight them directly. It might mean ignoring some wrongs in the city for the moment.. But that's your call. The penguins can and will toss "misbehaving" heroes out of the city. They're very capable of doing that.

Characters who are on this side are competing for prestige and rewards from the Council and Penguins. If they aren't discovered to be secretly working with the underground as well. If you can trust them to deliver.

If you're writing the roleplay for the council and penguins, mark it "Co-Op".

Examples
Co-Op: Return of the Dashing Rogue
(Co-Op) Konall's Grudge

Option Two) VRS: Join the underground resistance against the Penguins.

Working with underground movement, you'll operate subvertly in battling the Penguins. The Penguins will (of course) aggressively try to keep anyone associated with the underground out of Seaside Town.

You'll probably start by talking to the underground movement representative, who'll encourage you to sneak into the city, get threat assessments, and try to start trouble in the background. It's too dangerous for an open fight, at least for now. But if the resistance sets things up well enough, they'll send out a call for an open attack on the penguins.

You're encouraged to find evidence of wrongdoing, just like the Co-Op side can. Except for you, it's a main goal. You'll also want to get a threat assessment on the enemies. It's very likely the Penguins will discover the resistance movement and start moving to determine who is in the group and eliminate them, one way or another. So you'll want to stay out of sight, especially if you didn't bother to sneak in and get a pass. (Which might make sense. It might not be in everyone's character to actively deceive the council into giving them a pass. So you might just sneak in.)

If you're writing the roleplay for the underground resistance, mark it "VRS".

Examples
VRS: Pacific Coast Party!
(VRS) Through the Plot Hole Weirdly

OTHER NOTES

I posted a "History of Seaside Town" as a separate piece. Read it.

Voting will take place November 25th, 2016. Because of the voter's busy times, there will probably not be a lot of leeway for writing late.

The winner of the mission will receive 20 points. Other active players will receive less points based on activity and quality in relation to the winner and overall.

There will be Six voter awards, worth 1 extra point each You can win more than one award although we do slightly favor spreading them out.

Best Co-Op related roleplay/ co write. With a point each to one or more player characters involved at the voter's discretion.
  1. Best VRS related roleplay/ co write. With a point each to one or more player characters involved at the voter's discretion.
  2. Best solo - For our purposes, this refers to any roleplay with only player characters from a single handler, even if someone else might contribute on the NPC's.
  3. Best cowrite - A single piece with at least one player character each from two or more different handlers, even if it focuses on one character. There's no interaction required for this past voter Ichiro's own judgement on quality of the co-write.
  4. Funniest moment - we want to encourage humor. This is left to voter discretion.
  5. Most dramatic moment - we want to encourage drama. This is left to voter discretion.

Enemies

I listed several enemies in the mission Rollover to use or ignore as you please. Or add to the list and use your own hired enemies along with the Penguins. Or as a personal enemy, whatever.

I do want to address the Somber Six. Their name came up in an early mission and weren't mentioned again until this Rollover. They were created as a Penguin version of the Elite 7.

However, while players created the Elite 7, the Somber Six is meant to consist of mini and minor bosses from the proper Kingdom of Loathing game. (Not the Knob Goblin King, who was executed in the Season 1 Finale Wrap-up.

Rules: Feel free to add to the Elite Six if you want. There are two confirmed members. The Boss Bat and Baron Von Ratsworth. So there's currently four open slots. Just like Elite 7/8 members, they are not to be killed off without permission and are meant to be written as major threats, capable of challenging even 2-3 player characters, and possibly winning.

Each player (not character) can add a mini boss from KOL to the Somber Six, although it'll be up to me (Dash) to either approve of them as a full member, or write them as an associate, or what have you. Since these are characters from KOL, pretty much anyone can use them as each handler sees fit. Just don't kill them off.

And that's it! I'm sure it's enough, but I'll add more as replies or in notices if required.

Get to working on those bios, roleplays and co writes! Have fun!

Just time for a quick recap on how RP notes work.

When you post a roleplay or co write, also post the notes here.

Mostly, it's a non spoiler free summery or what happens in your roleplay. In fact, if there is a spoiler for a later roleplay that other players need to know, please comment on it here. I'll leave the qualifications for "need to know" information up to each writer, but error on the side of sharing please.

Obviously don't come to RP notes if you don't want to be spoilered. This is for keeping roleplays straight and when you don't quite have enough time to read them all closely.

If this is specifically a VRS or Co-Op roleplay, please note that.

Please include the title of the roleplay as well.

Please keep it short, sweet and to the point.

Thanks!

Sasy Snake's only solo - archive copy

Just a lil Sassy Snake solo, "Meetings, eatings and greetings." In a special cameo, Becky tells Sassy all about the Council meeting. Sassy attends it and then heads towards the resistance meeting. Along the way, she gets flyers and pamphlets from both sides, almost too many to count! They also run into Ravyn, who confronts Sassy. Ravyn says she's going to side with the Vikings and resistance, but Sassy has no idea which side to join!

Cattaras, Jen, Todd and Wildfall - archive copy

Next up is "Coffee Break." Wildfall and Todd are discussing if they want to work with the Council and penguins, or the Vikings and Resistance. After Todd talks about working with the Penguins, Cattaras is chased into the scene by Jen. The four discuss the same topic (and other things), with Wildfall and Todd saying working with the Penguins is the safer bet this time. Jen and Cattaras simply declare, "We're in." (Are they really, though?)

Alys and Wildfall's first of three co-writes - archive copy

"Wildfall, meet Alys," a wood elf who is very interested in the space elves. She's Aleena's newest player character and it should be quite interesting to see how that story plays out. Wildfall and she set out from Degrassi. (Wildfall had split up from Todd earlier and planned to leave the next morning, but it looks like plans changed.)

In the subtly titled "Hothead and Dumbass," Wildfall and Alys reach the town, where Wildfall pisses Alys off. He also convinces her they need to work with the Penguins to get them out of town - that simply trying to fight them all off would be suicidal. She reluctantly agrees to go along with it.

Scorecard - archive copy
Posted by: Dash

Well, it's time to kick off the third season with a fresh new page for mission & season rankings!

The Finale for mafia town is up, as is the next mission, but our mission #zero really isn't properly finished until the Scorecard goes up!

Roleplaying was okay.. for a sample mission. We got a total of seven player characters representing five handlers. Plus with the Season 3 bios, everyone had to do a new bios. The good news is, we're already up to 11 bios, representing seven unique players!

Some things to note, especially for new players.

  • Points go to player characters, not players.
  • The bonus awards don't affect mission ranking but do affect season ranking.
  • These usually include a mix of voter comments and my own thoughts on each character.
  • Note: Since its the first ranking of Season three, there's no separate "Season so far" totals!
  • Also, some of the awards were not given out due to the low number of roleplays. So the ones where there was little to no competition didn't get any winners. Three awards were handed out this mission worth a point each.
So let's get to the winner, shall we? (Yes.) I'll list each award that each character gets points from along with that character.

Winner First place - 20 points: Wildfall!

This one is mine, so I really don't have much to say. The voter noted he was all over the board, "being featured as a primary character in two thirds of the RP." I didn't know that til I read this, heh. Goes to show effort helps. The voter also praised me for retaining Wildfall's charm while exploring new dynamics. So Wilde takes 20 points here.

Wildfall was also one of four characters featured in the best co write, Coffee Break, along with Todd Blackpaws, Cattaras Whiteclaw and Jen. The voter complimented the Wildfall-centric opening as a "very peaceful, contemplative" way to set the mood.

Wilde earns 20 points + 1 for best co write. 21 points.

Runner up - Second place - 18 points: Alys The voter noted she is still finding her ground but praised her character as having potential. He also felt her co-writes with Wildfall presented an interesting dynamic, though he felt the action in those was a little fast.

18 points for Alys in her debut mission!

Third place: Shelldor - 17 points - tied - Yup!! Shelldor returns late in roleplaying. Voter Ichiro said the entire setup for his return as a turtle was great, and called the writing "Super imposing." Although the voter criticizes an overall lack of description (with the "light in the archway" being a noted exception), Ichiro also admitted Shelldor had "moments of greatness." Like Sassy.

Shelldor wins two awards! His only RP this mission won best solo, and that RP also earned him funniest moment for Shelldor trying to speak for the first time. The voter said he adored "Everything came out turtley."

Shelldor gets 19 points total!

Third place: Sassy Snake - 17 points - tied Sassy made her mark with the first roleplay of the mission, but isn't seen for the rest of roleplaying, sadly. The voter again praises her "unique voice." He also quite admired the part where she keeps getting more and more flyers, calling it "silly and lighthearted," a "perfect fit to the piece." Sassy should be ready to make a more powerful splash in the next mission though!

17 points for Sassy Snake for her solo story!

Fifth place - Todd Blackpaws - 16 points! Yup, Todd comes in next. Todd only took part in the award winning co-write, though. Voter Ichiro liked that everyone in it had their own voice and quirks. Todd was solid here and hopefully, we'll see more of the foxbard in the next mission!

Todd gets an extra point for being in Best co-write.
17 points total!

Sixth place - Cattaras Whiteclaw tied - Yup, another tie, which makes sense since Catt and Jen were only seen in "Coffee Break."

15 points + 1 for 16 total!

Sixth place - Jen of the Morlencir tied - Yup, another tie, which makes sense since Catt and Jen were only seen in "Coffee Break."

15 points + 1 for 16 total!

That's it! Congrats to all, and let's make the next mission a real success!
