Season 3, mission 3 MISSION INFORMATION Featuring two player debuts (SnowCatCuties and the fire mage Iris) and a ton of activity, this is also the first mission to really feature the Somber Six as a force in AIL - oh, and two of them debut in the mission as well!
teaser MISSION INFO
3M RP notes, ext. are next.
Only piece missing notes:
Sorry.. I'll also add expect like five our six weeks roleplaying.. with a date coming in a couple weeks or so hopefully.. :) :) Yeah a quickie.. a 'flash' mission... :) In the new mission called "Mansion Maniac Mysteries" our adventurers are trying to clear out a Haunted Mansion but there is a big problem- there is a force field and several neighboring buildings to get around before they can get to the Mansion. How will they get that done? - Binajane. ALSO... 5 awards for now.. Probably to be worth 2 points each. Each will only be awarded if there is enough competition for each. If there is enough competition to justify it, each will have a runner up worth a point each. Goodluck all!! It starts off with our very own Mary Kate, who patches up Wildfall and lets him sleep. Still wondering why people keep treating her like a kid, she goes out to explore Seaside Town. That's where she runs into SnowCatCuties. Snow is on a search to find her mother.. and information on the Somber Six. The two meet near the barrier around Spookyraven mansion and several buildings surrounding it. Find out more about SnowCat on her bio! -http://z11.invisionfree.com/AiL/index.php?showtopic=861 Leaving Wildfall to talk to the redhead, Mary Kate picks a guy at random to talk to.. turns out it's a sailor she knows, Boobs McGuffin, who doesn't really care for the nickname or for the girl Wildfall's talking to. Oh, that girl? Turns out it's a member of the family Wildfall sold his house to, which is implied but not directly stated. She says Wildfall inspired her to adventure and offers to help out him and "his girl" with information on the mission. Stay tuned for more! Although it isn't really a battle. She psyches the Paladin out, using her magical princess smoke gown to imitate her cysuit. It's a new ability, but it works well enough to throw Paladin off his game. Paladin flees and then Catt and Jen show up. Aleena has Jen's help to basically 'reset' Aleena's cysuit and Dash's nanites so they can hopefully work as normal again. Catt notices Catrina isn't there. Unsure of where else to go, Dash suggests the "HUB" city of Seaside Town. Features brief nudity without much description and such. BC: Fumblie's Return [Part 2/2] has Fumblies up at the Ninja Village where he learns some details about what is going on. Sassy, Linger and Icy had previously ran into a victim of a mindbender, in the previous roleplay so in THIS one, Sassy speculates that maybe the mindbender had cast an "illusion of discouragement" which might be the reason for the force field... It's only speculation but Sassy plans to look into that possibility soon! That's it for notes on this one, nice and short.. they haven't found Gem or Bristle yet either. It starts with Blackeagle relaxing in Ninja village when they find out Fumblies has been missing and the Ninja Council wants John and Sherri to go find Fumblies. Oh, and John is working on their house in his downtime. They set out to Seaside Town to meet Becky Joy about finding him. Later, Becky Joy meets a girl named Tomato who had been in a trio of Wildfall and Mary Kate stories. Well, now Tomato's hanging with Becky! Sir Fumblies shows up next and Becky and Tomato fill him in. (He's got a makeshift Fumblies command with him.) Then we cut back to Blackeagle, who deal with clowns, arrive in town and meet up with Becky, Fumblies and the others. It ends with Becky taking them to study that darned force field. Fun co-write with lots of different things going on! Mary worries it might have reacted to her and, since she isn't a mage, that possibility worries her a great bit. She and Gem figure it might be someone else on the other side- and Gem hopes that someone is her good friend Mole. Meanwhile, Wildfall and Mary are trying to ply that hole in the force field open . . . Introducing a plucky new character named Iris! Iris was a mercenary hired onto the Penultimate Fantasy Airship for a few years, until the hostile takeover of the ship by the evil clown. Adventure quickly falls into her lap when she's present at the arrival of the new Somber Six member the Renaissance Giant! Along the way you'll see flashbacks with her about her life in the Loathing Sky, and why she was encouraged to leave for some recuperation and change of scenery in the Loathing Kingdom below. Starts out with Wildfall, Bristle and Icy meeting an old mage called "Frosty." Frosty thinks he can maybe help with the force field. Sir Fumblies shows up and examines the force field. Frosty might be the ice mage, but I like to think Wildfall is the cool one here. :) Wildfall seems curious about the ice mage's name. But they focus on trying to get the force field open - and Fumblies casts a detection spell. Then we cut back to a bit earlier when Becky, being nice, offers to show Blackeagle, who are very hungry, places to eat at the market square. They pass some stores. Neat stuff. They stop at "Gobs' Gadgets," where John ends up seeing plans for something similar to a handglider which gets John thinking. Oh, then they decide to grab hotdogs in the way back. Blackeagle are surprised to hear Becky talk about hot dogs and the thing she says hasn't been invented yet - pizza. (Although they passed a pizzeria on the way in.) Sassy's curious about updates on Sparks, who it turns out, has an update for her. They figure it might be possible to get by the force field using cracks. That's when Boobs McGuffin rushes, trying to break through the field himself. Turns out Bristle and Gem, with him, mentioned Mary was trapped in the field. Well, turns out Sparks has a friend who agrees to try to get himself, Gem and McGuffin in it. He tells them to return at midnight, so they go to eat and get supplies for the time being. Our third mission, Mansion's Maniac Mysteries, is now concluded and what a fun ride it was too! A huge thank you to those that helped me write it, especially Mary Kate's handler, Binajane, who helped me get the Finale up a lot quicker than I would otherwise. Which is good, since I'm anxious to get the next mission up in time for the real life winter holidays! The next mission will probably be set during summer'ish in the AIL world, but we'll expand on that when we get to it. Thank you as always to Ichiro, our regular voter, for doing his thing and I hope you all enjoyed the Finale. He also did a handful of awards, which I'll mention here as well. We offered awards in five categories - Best solo, best co-write, most humorous moment, best use of NPC and (befitting both the timing of the mission and the Spookyraven scene) scariest moment. The points awarded were based on overall mission activity. Since it was such a successful mission, each award had a 3 point winner and a single point runner up. Great job, guys and gals! Since we had a lot of points, we set the top winner score at 20 points. Here's how the votes went!
First up is the Mansion's Maniac Mysteries winner- Sir Fumblies! Fumblies made his return late in the mission- early September of this year (2017, for archival purposes). He was last seen in a co-write posted early January of this year, while the character showed up last way back in an April posting - the Finale part III for Catbird: Search and Rescue. A lot of our winners were all over the board for the mission they won. Fumblies, on the other hand, takes it with two back-to-back solo roleplays (I helped with) and two additional co-writes. It's great having him back, too! Ichiro praised the writing for Sir Fumblies as "good fun (and dry) humor." The voter also mentioned Fumblies had "great stories" . . . "with a great grasp on his character." The stories from Fumblies also earned praise on his descriptions and imagery and for what the voter called "the anticlimax of the time travel line." In fact, the "anticlimax of finding out that he and his ghost pal hadn't time traveled" earns Fumblies Most Humorous Moment for 3 points! The voter mentions he can be a "sucker" for a good anti climax moment. It's extremely nice to have Fumblies back! Welcome back, Kris!
Fumblies - 20 points (winner) + 3 points (Funniest moment)
Runner up - Mary Kate O'Toole! The brawler from Ireaca isn't just kicking butt in her stories; the lass is kicking butt on the rankings too! Voter Ichiro had very positive things to say about her improvement, complementing the character for "coming out of her shell." I thought she showed a lot of variety in her various co-writes, with Mary wrapping things up nicely with a solo at the end. She scores a variety of voter "high points" throughout her co-writes; being fluttered (frustrated) with SnowCatCuties, the passionate writing and use of pacing in "Pleasure Before Business" with Wildfall, her meeting with various NPC's and most of all, the character's growth throughout the mission as well as the smaller story of her seeming to cause the crack on the force field and then being terrified at the idea that she seemed to have caused it! On the solo (which is her last bit for the mission and sees her inside of the force field, fending for herself), Ichiro is, in his words, "really happy to see this piece, you can almost feel Mary's growth as a writer through it." First, Mary Kate and Wildfall each earn a single point for Runner-up for Best use of a NPC! Although the voter mentions liking Boobs McGuffin (especially as a straight-man for the comedic parts of the story), it's the little street urchin, Gem, who earns them the point! As the voter put it so well, this NPC "enhanced the pieces she was a part of like no other NPCs." But wait, there's more! Specifically, there's three points for Spooky Scene award for the moment where the portal seals up behind her, trapping her in! Voter called it "a legitimate moment of peril" and said it "captured the feel perfectly." Mary, Wildfall and Koumori EACH earn three points for Best co-write, thanks to "Falling Through The Cracks". It's the last co-write for Mary and Koumori for the mission, although Mary does score a solo roleplay after with Koumori cameo'ing. The voter praises Mary's character growth as "great." (Plus, of course, it's the moment that won her the Spooky Scene award.) Mary Katherine, you earned your 19 points, plus the seven additional points! The way she is improving, she should continue to score well in the future. Thanks to her awards and high scoring, she earns the most points of any character this mission - congratulations on that, MK!
During "Falling Through...", Ichori noted, "I didn't think it was possibly to adore Koumori's character more" and called him "just the right writer" to handle a character unable to communicate in words, which he calls a "great concept." (Fun fact: That isn't a first for AIL. Zanther Wolf pulled off a similar concept early on in AIL's long life.) As mentioned, Koumori gets 3 points for best co-write ("Falling through the Cracks")! Voter commented on this one that "every bit of Koumori" was "amazing." Very well deserved praise. Koumori is a powerful addition to AIL. Like his debut last mission, this piece shows off why very nicely.
For Koumori, that's 18 points and a 3 point award.
The third member of "Falling Through the Cracks" (Wildfall) also ties for third! The voter noted, "Wildfall came across (as) far more tender in this mission, which worked to his favor." I'm proud of this showing. Wildfall and Mary are again together for all of Wildfall's pieces minus one. During the Fumblies/ Wildfall opening for "Twofer," Ichiro noted "the weight of Wildfall's worries (over Mary being sealed into the force field) was completely felt, really powerful." As noted, Ichiro also complimented the "tons of passionate writing" in "Pleasure before business" and the strong setup in the follow up during "Love Hurts." We covered Wildfall's award wins in Mary's section.
3 points for being in Best Co-write (Falling Through the Cracks) - The voter liked Wildfall's song at the beginning and said Wildfall was "great" for most of this one. Yay!
For Wildfall, that's 18 points, and six more from the awards.
Finally, Iris ties for third place as well. The newcomer to AIL is here with a single great debut piece! Although she only got her solo, it was quite an impressive solo. Ichiro called it "super good." I'm just going to quote his highlight on her piece. "Wow, this piece was super good. Amazing use of description, I love the usage of sound effect, so happy to see more accents. Great description, wonderful use of pacing, just really really good." He further commented that Iris "just blew (him) away this mission. Just wow." Her solo piece set her story, established her backstory, and introduced us to the Renaissance Giant, our latest Somber Six member. So we have another very strong addition to AIL. Iris gets a bonus points award! Best solo scores her three points! She gets big points on "The Flame of the Iris" for her use of descriptive writing. Ichiro especially praised her clever use of sound effects here, saying they really helped her piece "so much." Great job, Iris!
So Iris, that is 18 points for third place and 3 points for Best Solo.
Sassy Snake scores sixth place on the scorecard! Though not super-active as she has been in many recent missions, Sassy "put out strong work" in our voter's words. He also called her "a joy to read." "Great characterization through voice and accents" sums up a lot of his praise for Sassy Snake, with clever use of things like "good traits (and) voice ticks." He liked the twist of Pete being used as a sort of "little reflection of Sassy." Sassy's stories are always unique and clever, and very well written. And other than a few small issues here and there, she did consistently great, in both my eyes and those of the voter. Let's take a look at Sassy's award, shall we? Although she took several award wins during the last few missions, this time she has to settle for Best use of a NPC. Although the voter mostly focuses the best NPC's of each player-character, Linger and Spark both get mentioned here for always "enhancing the pieces they're in." Ichiro often speaks highly of Linger and his characterization and rightfully so.
Four solos earn Sassy Snake sixth place and 17 points!
SnowCatCuties sinks the seventh spot! I just noticed sixth and seventh both went to characters whose name starts with S. Heh. Anyway, our second and final debut of the mission is praised as a "great debut." It's always nice to have new players on board, and Snow started with the co-write with Mary Kate and also added two solos of her own. The voter is fond of the "secret agent" ish vibe she brings to the table. It'll be nice having a bounty hunter type character again. We had something similar in Samus X-treme years ago but he is long gone and this is a totally different style. She got praised on little things, starting with Snow going through all the variations on her name to Mary. Voter liked the humor in her first solo and its "very nice infiltration vibe." He called it "fun" and called her second solo a "strictly better" version of everything he liked about the first bit.
Hunt For The Mansion earns 1 point for runner-up for best solo.
"While new quite spooky," the voter admitted, her winning moment "did a great job of building an intense and worrisome moment" while the overall roleplay is praised for being "a ton of fun, and a cool set up to see."
For SnowCatCuties, that's 16 points for seventh place PLUS 2 points (one for each runner up spot).
Blackeagle are next in the 8th spot! Praised for their "continued growth" and the storyline of integrating them into the AiL / KOL world slowly in a realistic way (as realistic as one can be in a strange world like AIL), we get to see them with Fumblies a couple co-writes. The first also has Becky while the second instead has Wildfall as the forth player character. "It feels natural how ingrained in the world they have become," as Ichiro put it; he also praised their dialog in "Twofer" as "great." Ichiro called that overall piece "tons of stuff to be proud of." They earn a point for playing straight man role for runner up for Becky Joy's "I wish someone would hurry up and invent pizza, though!" routine. Although it's Becky's line mentioned for the award, Ichiro later added, "While Becky is the punchline, the straight man... duo is important for the set up." (Similar praise to what McGuffin got for his role in early pieces.)
Blackeagle - 15 points plus a bonus runner-up point.
Becky Joy bounces in for the 9th spot, second to last as is turns out for the mission. My second character ever. Ichiro's quote: "While Becky is always a Joy, there were a lot of stand-outs this time." Voter called Becky "a joy to read" (I see whatchya did thar) and "funny and sweet," but she was facing harsh competition this time around. She did get the point for Most humorous moment- runner up, as I mentioned in Blackeagle's piece. "Just a great sequence," voter Ichiro said. (Thank you, Ichiro!)
Becky- 14 points for her ranking and another point for being second funniest moment!
Tied for last - Cattaras Whiteclaw, Sebastian Dash and Morlencir elves Jen & Aleena These are four characters who have ranked exceptionally well in past missions. This time around, they were still taking care of their "side mission" which was basically going after Black Paladin multiple times. "Fun reads," the voter said, although the side mission feel of this- and the repetitiveness of chasing the Paladin last mission and this mission hurt their overall scoring. They were all seen together for a pair of co-writes. The voter did admit to liking their work this time around. They each get 13 points plus a point for Best co-write - runner up! (Although they're not in the title, Catt and Jen are in this co-write so they get points for it.) Voter comments: "Runner up: Aleena and Dash vrs. the Black Paladin! While it feels like a side story piece, it was still a lot of fun to read."
Cattaras Whiteclaw - 14 points
Last mission, I had absolutely no time to give any thoughts on the rankings, so this time, I think I will bring back an old tradition and comment on one thing I like for each character and one thing I'd like to see for their future work. Maybe a suggestion for improvement, maybe something we haven't seen, or maybe just something that strikes my fancy. Some of these thoughts are influenced by voter comments but they're my own. (Comments, then points total for the season so far.) Enjoy, everyone! Thanks for reading. New mission should be up soon.
#2) Sassy Snake adds 20 points here. Clearly, she's still competitive with Wildfall for the lead. The voter commented on how good her accents for characters are, although I'd personally like to see her continue to develop her NPC's in other ways, like word choices or sentence structure, past just spelling things differently. (Although she also does pretty well with even the points I'd like to see improved on in the future, to be fair. I'd just like to maybe see her rely more on those and less on "accents," although some might disagree.)
#3) Mary Kate - An impressive 26 points and Mary really jumps in the ranking! I love it. Her character is amazing. The voter mentioned she could use better word choice and less repetition of words and phrases. So a lil polish might help her a lot.
#4) Cattaras Whiteclaw only got 14 points this time, but it's enough to keep his solid grip on the 4th spot. I'd love to see more of him, although I also love how the character is developing.
#5) Todd Blackpaws - Our bard didn't show up this time. Hilarious character. It'd be interesting to see what happens to those girls he's been with, or what happens if he runs into some. More of Todd's past, please.
#6) Aleena also only took 14 points this time. I'd love to see a lot more of her, and I hope we get to see the effects of the trauma she's going through. She plays just about any role she is in to a T, however.
#7) Becky Joy got 15 points this time. Her sense of humor is wonderful and her sense of fun is infectious. Maybe we need to see more of her brains in use sometimes, though?
#8) (tied) Shelldor - 66. More Shelldor! Not only do we need more Shelldor & Bob stories, we need more of Shelldor IN those stories, please!
#8 (tied): Dash - 52 gained 14 points. Maybe we need to see him with new characters and focused on the mission, but he's a very solid character who actually lead the first two seasons of AIL.
#10) Blackeagle got another 16 points here and continue to improve. The dialog, either just the two of them or interacting with others, is usually spot on. What could improve? Probably their descriptions and such.
#11) Jen's additional 14 points helps her edge closer to a top ten spot. Her romance with Cattaras is great for both of them and her warrior persona is often spot-on and flawless. The best thing for her would be to continue to be active, and for her to continue to develop a her own individual. Spotlight those differences from Jen and the other Morlencir, girl!
#12) Catrina - 54. I do hope we see her again soon. (We did in the Finale, so that's a really good sign.)
#13) Koumori got 21 points, so he's jumped up in the lower rankings. It would be nice to see a lot more of him and Mary AND a lot more of him solo, as both of those are unique and great in their own ways. I'll let the voter's praise of him during this mission and last do my talking for his many strengths.
#14) Fumblies - 23 points to Fumblies, which doubles his season score for his return. I love his sense of humor. I'd like to see those many NPC's he uses get more personality. Too often, they're a voiceless mass for the most part.
#15) Alys wasn't in this mission. Solid character. As much as I enjoy her obsession with the space elves, she has to continue developing more character past that as well.
#16) Fahari keeps her spot, since she wasn't here.
#17) Spaghettigirl is due for a big update soon, I hear. Hopefully it comes in the next mission!
#18) Iris gets her 21 points from this amazing debut. I'd love to see even more of her from each mission in the future.
#19) SnowCatCuties is in last place but to be fair, she just debut and did very well.
MISSION points!
