Mission: SEASIDE TOWN: THE BURNING
MISSION INFORMATION
This is the out of character mission information and RP Notes
New standards are set for AIL as the Knob Goblins try to burn the town to the foundation!

This was, as noted elsewhere, one hell of a mission!

With two subquests, and six Live roleplays, 17 seperate roleplays/ co-writes/ Live RP's total, four players debuting and a player 'cameo,' it went far above and beyond just fighting a fire, althoug the fire got plenty of attention, too!

And since this is a spoiler page, I'll go ahead and spoil it. This really is a mission where things change heavily, leading into the Mission finale! We started laying in the clues to Catrina's betrayal at the end of the mission as far back as Enter Hey Daze, since it involves the Sun Orb. The plot makes use of a few cursed items formerlly in the possession of Konall Bearsmasher, which, like the Sun Orb, were used in some of AIL's earliest missions! Lil spoiler- Catrina ends up recruiting some more of her former allies into new new cause. That's next mission.

Hm.. oh yeah, the debuting players!

  • Crabjesus joined ages ago, but never actually participated in AIL until this mission. He was by luck on YIM when we were doing our first Live RP for the mission. His name about sums him up, but it was well written.
  • Awakensun appeared and vanished at random during the first two parts of the 8 bit trilagy of Live RP's. She's a wind hippie- with a wind eagle for a familiar!
  • Sir Fumblie Falanges was one of two new starts to debut in two Live RP's later, in what ended up being by far the biggest Live RP in AIL's history thus far. He's an interesting one who made another apperance in the closing Live RP for AIL.
  • Maximal Thordicus also debut in that Live RP. Although it's his only apperance that mission, he was an undeniable presense in that roleplay.

Fun note #1- The mission notes were posted with a poll asking "How do you prefer to extingish the fires in Seaside Town?"
The current results are one vote for sleaze and stench, two for water and ice and no votes for "something else."

Here's the various notes and mission scores, other than these chapters which are missing notes.
Shamus Xtreme's only, Catrina and Dash's second co-write, and the Ninth Live RP.
Enjoy the spoilers.

Sorry about the wait.. was a pain finding someone to vote, but Konall pulled through for us!

Votes SHOULD be up this week though along with a special "Pixie interlude" that'll comment on who 'won' the last mission.

Let's get this moving!

I'll post our Live RP shortly after this!

I threw a short rollover that sets the basic premise of the Knob Goblins taking over the Council of Loathing's building. We've done a Live roleplay with a few members which I'll be posting very soon! Take a look as it sets the mood quite well.

I want this mission to feel very desperate. There are still a few Knob Goblins around town, even with the fire. And a few hostages / leftovers that might be saved, or save you. We're 'probably' not going to let any sections of town burn to cinders. But it's up to us to write it how we want it to go. Still, if you're with KOKOL or Winking Judge in any form, stopping the fire should be your first priority.

Remember, we'd been fighting and driven back by the time the fire starts. Some forces might still be in town, or trapped. Others are wounded, dying, dead, or recuperating outside of town.

This is the "Big Finale" of the first AIL season; bring your best stories here!

The Elite 7 are holed up in the main building at the start of the story. They've taken their shots and even a few defeats in the war already, but they're still absurdly dangerous. The only exception is Amras, who's snuck off along with KOKOL member (former member?) Feena. The Knob Goblin King has used his magical influence to force the Dragon to help set the town ablaze!

Note the dragon was wounded and temporarily taken out of action earlier by Catrina Whiteclaw.

I am thinking at least six weeks for roleplaying, although I'd love some feedback on it.

AIL Live Roleplay sessions are currently planned to take place Thursday evenings or nights on AIL. If you want to partake in them, contact me via private message or post here. You will need to provide a Live RP stat sheet and keep it updated in addition to having a normal AIL bio.

And here's a fun poll to tie into the mission.

Mission scores will hopefully go up later this week.

Hi, everyone! The last mission is officially wrapped up and the new mission is officially on! Sorry it took so long; I had problems finding voters. I'll try to have a voter for the whole mission instead of having to scamper to find one when the roleplaying is all up. And we'll need it; this mission starts with a rather short Rollover, but a very lengthy Live Roleplay session!

This is a very focused mission so notes will be as important here as any other point in AIL. Try to give us an idea of how you see the town's burning down happening, what's saved and which's clearly lost. There are a limited amount of characters left in the town, since the war cleared most of us out one way or the other. The Knob Goblin forces fell back to the center of town, and the rest of KOKOL and Seaside Town's forces and allies were driven out of town.

Anyway, here is it!

Roleplay notes go here!

Live RP V notes - archive copy

<I just noticed how massive this piece is. So I'll have to really skim here to keep it a readable length.>

(Our first Live RP was done a while ago. It opens with a recap on my part of recent events, then cuts to our KOKOL heroes, who are camped outside Town, recovering from an earlier war. Our heroes eat, chat and prepare for battle. Kadlin hands out rat potions and spiderweb potions. Konall leaves a 'slutted up' wizard's cloak for Lapine, which will give her +2 cold resistance and +2 fire damage to spells. Dash wonders if we'll see any of the large rats (the kind from the KOL game) or any minions of the ratlike Muri-Dan during this mission. We get a little insight into the Viking mindset and meet Crabjesus finally!)

<Dash spots 'something' in the distant horizon but can't tell what it is. It's the backup army for the Knob Goblins but the heroes don't know that. The first two waves have hit, but there's still more enemies out there! Before KOKOL can head into that suicide mission, Spaz notices, oops, Seaside Town is burning down! :)>

Narrator: "Becky is worried about her Wolf, and the heroes agree they need to try to help put the fires out, despite Todd's aversion to the idea. There are demonic spirits hanging in the air of Seaside Town! But Spaz determines it's best to ignore them for now as they're no immediate danger. Using stench and sleaze attacks, regular ol' water, or whatever it takes to fight the fire, the heroes force their way into the middle of town, which seems immune from the fire! We find the Knob Goblins holed up in the council building. How exciting!"

(<The town hall has been graffiti'ed by the goblins with various misspelled words and poorly-painted obscene pictures.> The building itself seems to glow. Who knows what twisted magic is at work inside it's walls?)

(As Grillhamo and Jester King of Beasts taunt the KOKOL forces, they have to fight off an army of Knob Goblin Elites! Becky talks one into joining her side and the others are dealt with. Crabjesus throws up some elemental assistance. A circle of a dozen Knob Goblin pyromancers are seen feeding the fire. Amras and Feena sneak out of AIL, possibly forever.)

<And wrapping it up, Cattaras and Jester King of Beasts surprise attack our heroes! And that's the cliffhanger we leave this story on!>

What you need to know for Towers I and II.

Most important thing: Spaz claimed to have rescued the council. He obviously didn't do it by himself. So if you want to rescue the council, go ahead. Spaz only needs to help in the slightest bit in your story. Thanks.

Basically, in Tower I, Kadlin puts out fires with sleaze magic while Konall knocks down the water tower, quenching fires.

In Tower II, Konall and Kadlin get in a massive fight and slaughter a ton of goblins while knocking down a large stone watch tower.

Another Live Roleplay is up! This one focused on us making our way into the Council building where we square off with and barely beat Grillhamo, Cattaras, and the Jester King of Beasts.

Kadlin, Dash, Catrina and Arkane (Who just showed up) squared off against the Elite 7, while Lapine, Vixen, Todd, and Konall held off the Knob Goblin reinforcements in the background.

Some new pieces of equipment are found, and Catrina has conflicted feelings towards MTiger, before an invisible wall forces the KOKOL forces OUT of the Council's building. Note that: An invisible wall nearly crushes them, forcing them out in the process!

Also note near the end of the fight, Mtiger and Konall show up to replace Sebastian and Kadlin, who suffer during the battle. MTiger is off to rally the troops again as the other heroes go their own ways.. :)

Becky and Kadlin's only - archive copy

Back at it again. This time it was co written with Funki, who actually did more of the writing on this than I did, including most of the Becky Joy word game. (I edited her parts in it to Becky'fy it.)

The important part of this mission has King MTiger having asked for whatever mages could be spared to head up to little Canadia, to help fight off a wave of Knob Goblin freaks and scientific misfits. Though the real magic of the roleplay was probably the interaction between Becky, Kadlin Bearsmasher, and special guest stars Spaz and (NPC) General Briggs Detre.

I did make some *ahem* sappy comment about a line of sap trees between Lil Canadia and Seaside Town which supposedly cut physical damage in half and double magic power. Really, I stole this from Final Fantasy IV: The After years as a bit of a 'joke.'

The reason the Knob Goblins are going up to lil Canadia is probably to steal magical items to help them in their war on .. us!

It's a funny little roleplay, I think. Quite enjoyable as both a Kadlin piece and a Becky piece.

Dash, Konall, Vixen and Lapine - archive copy
Posted by: Sebastian Dash

We're back with another co write!

This one featured Konall, Dash, Vixen and Lapine fighting off a self styled pyromancer who referred to himself as Grimdeath the Incinerator, though Dash claimed he had another name in the past. Anyway, he throws a rather impressive array of fire attacks at our heroes, using a flame wall to defend himself. Konall finds a weak spot in the wall of flames, and charged through it. Konall slammed into Grimdeath, taking him out of the fight. Konall fainted from the effort of the attack, though.

Cattaras appears before Dash can finish off the mage, forcing Dash back. A strange mirror appears in front of Dash, Vixen and Lapine. The Jester King of Beasts appears behind Dash, the sun orb in his hand. He uses it to focus his powerful magic on the three as they charge forward to attack!

The next thing they know, they find themselves in an alternate, half frozen version of Seaside Town, face to face with twisted versions of themselves, with an inevitable fight ahead of them.

And that's where this part of the story ends... J (Dash)

Throwin' up the first of a three Part Live RP! It's fairly short for a Live RP, but it does have notes at least. I'm messing with the format, trying to figure what looks best for those things.

The story? Jester King of Beasts throws our heroes into another dimension, much like he threw Dash, Vixen and Lapine into another world. Only instead of ending up in a mirror type world, they end up in strange 8 bit lands!

We see TheGimp briefly as a cameo in the strange new world. We also saw Fluffy Hamster running along a rooftop in Seaside Town, meaning he must have escaped.

Anyway back to the story! Becky Joy, Todd Blackpaws, Konall Bearsmasher, and Spaz walk through a strange pixilated (IE 8 bit) land, do a lot of talking, meet a strange hippie girl (Awakensun's her name but we don't know that yet), fight a strange blob creature, enter a cave, and are confronted by a strange mushroom being that refers to us as Badgers! The nerve. It runs off, the hippie girl runs off in the other direction, and we follow the tracks of the mushroom creature into a cave, where we fight the bat like Keese!

We defeat them, but don't get to pose to victory music.. awww.. Part II should be up soon!

Hi all. Live RP VII: 8 Bit World Part II

Nothing of much relevance to you in this one or the next. After exiting the cave, we run into the hippie, then find a strange village, where the head chief, a talking mushroom, scares off the hippie. After much debating and trying to prove we're not badgers, we end up agreeing to defeat some evil turtle king in order to prove we're not badgers, and get some help on our way back to our world!

There is a slight bit of metahumor in this one as well. Please check it out. :)

Movie style teaser: The wandering bard, childlike mage, and atypically typical Viking warrior meet a couple new allies in a strange new land, take on monsters and the head lizard, and Oyster Egg hunt!

That's right! Becky Joy, Todd Blackpaws, and Konall Bearsmasher are back for the third and final round of action in what is by far the longest and possibly best Live RP session so far!

Most of it is divided up into character interaction, solving "devious" puzzles and fighting 8 bit style monsters. But the notes alone would take too long to explain it all.

We meet two new allies; Sir Fumblie Falanges (a half-orc Seal Clubber with Sauceror abilities as well) and Maximal Throdicus (an animal summoner with a unique way of speaking) and his horse (er.. a horse).

After fighting the 'main boss,' 'nicknamed' Koopa, we end up teleporting back to the Seaside Town, which, alas, is still on fire.

Kay just over two weeks of roleplaying left! :)

Dark screen. Disembodied voice of a certain Feline.

Well, this sucks...

I guess this is what you'd call a cliffhanger, huh?

Well... anyway. New rp is up and in it I get to rescue a certain barbarian before my stupid brother and the JKOB can kill him- or worse.

But as we're fightin I get hit by this wierd beam from this mirror that clown is holding and I get sucked in!

Then I guess everybody forgot about me and went home.

Next time: I wonder where I'm gonna come out?

Sorry.. I meant to get the notes up earlier. These are the notes on "Dark world I" by Vixen and myself.

The last co write the two were in ended up with them teleported to this other world. In this one, they fight the exact copies of themselves. Sebastian is knocked out by his counterpart, Master Dark, who intervenes in the fight between Vixen and *her* counterpart, Bandit. Vixen had torn Bandit's top off and was putting the boots to her when Dark dropped Vixen with a blow from behind.

Meanwhile, Lapine loses a fight to her counterpart, Runic. Dark and Bandit join them, talking about finishing Dash off and taking Lapine and Vixen hostage. At this point, Lapine surprises all three with blasts of magic. They subdue her, but it gives Vixen time to grab Dash and get out of sight.

That's where our roleplay ends.

"Yarrr, matey!" *giggle*

Catrina swaggers onto the stage dressed in an outfit that if it's not truly pirate gear then certainly it's pirate inspired. Her motions are suggestive to the degree that if you were a tom you'd be thinking this was a porn channel right now.

"Avast ye, ye land lubbers! Catrina here to..." She suddenly giggles again. "Oh goddess.. I don't know how Coconuts does it. So anyway, new RP and well... this time it starts out with me trying to help out Konall- but getting my kitty ass sucked into the same trap Dash fell for!

That's okay though he seems to need my help as we both discover that the locals here are pretty much impale first ask questions later when it comes to his other!

They're better toward me- although I was a bit... um.. under dressed for them! *Laughs*

So anyway we get taken to see the leaders of this place- one of them is ME!

Well.. not me, actually but... well you'll see when you see it!

She gave us some advice and promised help- and even gave me this neat outfit!"

Catrina turns tail toward the camera. Her tail is up high letting everyone see her ass clad in tight leather pants. She spanks a cheek. "Like what you see?"

Coming up: Dark dealings... Okay who writes this crap?

Sorry.

I've been a little distracted, so I'm a bit behind on this.

fix'ed/ updated with Season totals

But it probably should go up since "The Burning" was a legendary mission by AIL terms. Tons of roleplays, co writes, and Live RP's. *Fourteen* people generated votes this mission!

I went back to a friend of mine, Dave, to vote for us for the mission, relaying once again on another roleplayer I met / know through e-wrestling. Which I believe makes him the third voter to fit that criteria, and that's not including Mitch or me.

I'll include his comments in a later post, since I had permission, and stick to the voting points for now. He included comments for each roleplay as well as his thoughts on the top three vote getters. For now, I'll post the vote getters with a mix of my thoughts and the voter's.

Winner: Sebastian Dash is marked the winner with 20 points! Dave used phrases like "monumental effort" and talked about Dash being a "strong, consistent character." Which I guess is true; I wrote a lot. Dash and Catrina face some unique challenges, from the fire and Elite 7, to a side quest on a whole nother world.

Second place (tied): Konall Bearsmasher ties for second place with 19 points. Konall, who a lot of people say had the best lines of the mission, made his very much anticipated return after years away from AIL during the last mission. So he's firmly established in this mission.

Second place (tied): Catrina Whiteclaw ties with 19 points. We see a payoff to a story that started way back in Enter Hey Daze. Of course, it's Catrina, so expect plenty of action, sexuality and language abuse. The voter tags her as "Probably the strongest character in all of this," complimenting her on a well written, solid narrative.

Forth place: Kadlin Bearsmasher works her magic for 18 points. Although she doesn't show up nearly as much as Konall, she only comes up a point short of him. She took part in the opening Live RP for the mission, went on for a two parter with her brother, and joined Becky Joy for a trip to Lil Canadia. Very quickly establishing her own unique identity. Voter said she got to shine in Crisis in Lil Canadia.

Fifth place: Speaking of Becky Joy, she's next up on the last, taking the spot with 17 points! Though she did get called annoying. More of a cameo than a main star in the first Live roleplay. She showed up in a few others after that, using her ice magic to great effectiveness in this mission.

Sixth place: Vixen steals the 5th with 16 points! She started making her mark about six missions ago, so she's something of an AIL veteran at this point.

Lapine takes the seventh slot with a respectable 15 points. The more recently established Lapine has legs of her own, so to speak and some powerful magic to boot.

I'm a bit surprised that Shamus Xtreme only took 14 points, which is a good amount of points, but only puts him in eighth place. He only did one piece but it was quite good. Heavy on the action, which is a little unique for Shamus pieces, but no less funny.

Todd Blackpaws snags himself both 13 points and ninth place, despite being relegated to Live RP's and co-writes which usually had more than two main characters in them.

Raw Hide contributed a single, fairly short and gimmicky roleplay, but it was an amusing gimmick. (Voter agreed, as you'll see below.) It got him both tenth place and 13 points. He did introduce a handful of NPC's to be on the side of KOKOL, and Raw himself had a surprise in the Finale!

Sir Fumblies only made a couple Live RP's in this one, but it's enough to secure him 12 points, which rants him firmly in eleventh place. We see him in traditional roleplays in the next mission. Highest points of the mission's debuts!

Maximal Thordicus didn't ever spell his name out in his one Live RP appearance, so it was sort of filled in as Maximus by the voter. Name confusion aside, he snags 11 points for doing very well in his only AIL showing this mission, which doubled as his debut. That's twelfth place out of a lucky fourteen.

Crabjesus shows up briefly to take home ten points which puts him at last place out of the fourteen who were eligible for votes. Maybe he'll be back again someday?

Awakensun also ties for last with ten points! She only shows up during a Live RP and had a bit of a quiet role. The voter wants to see more of her 'voice...' We'll see if we get to see that next mission!

A fun fact is there are instances of people earning less than 10 points, the least given here, for other missions in the past, not including the original sample mission which was worth only 5 points to the winner!

I'll add the voter's comments here at some point, probably soon!

Congrats to all who earned points and thank you for voting on us, Dave!

Voter Comments (Dave)
Posted by: AiL (on behalf of Dave)

Joshua asked me VERY nicely to come in and judge. I’m somewhat familiar with Kingdom of Loathing, but I’m decently familiar with critiquing writing. I promise to be nice :) - Dave

Sebastian, Catrina, Crabjesus, and Konall

The live RP format allowed for the banter to be a lot more organic than in the single-written roleplays later on. Everyone kept to character and got a chance to show what they did. Catrina was snarky, Kadlin was benevolent and had clever things, Dash was a smartass, Konall was brutish - and so forth. Konall also gets the line of the night with "You! Gay clown. Me and my axe need to talk with you about puns."

However, some characters were lost in the shuffle here - I just didn't notice them as much. I think that tells me who was more take charge during the live RP. This was fun to read either way.

 The Tower I and II:

Kadlin and Konall make a very good comedic duo, the writer knows how to make jokes. Spaz was particularly funny here with his rant about his busy three hours.
What's funny is the strength of this piece is all dialogue, but the dialogue itself was very wooden. Very "He said she said" kinda stuff. Once the great jokes are removed, you're not left with very much substance or emotion. I all feels like its written in deadpan.

Rumble in the Council Building:

This was mostly action and so much harder to vote on. However, Catrina was the real star here and really dictated the action to everyone. Not too much else to comment on, to be honest!

Crisis in Lil Canadia, Odd Pairing

Fight scenes were very well done, and I'm glad Kadlin got a chance to shine here as his understated sort of put-upon character came across well here. I find Becky's "I'm annoying and infantile but really powerful!" schtick to really be kind of one-note, so it wears after a while - but this was a good RP.

Grimdeath the mage and Jester's dark mirror

Glad to see a bit out of Lapine and Vixen, although this was nearly entirely in action. I can't really vote for a favourite out of this one because nobody really stood out, and the majority of this RP was action. However, the action was well-written and fun. I will comment that Dash remains solid and consistently entertaining throughout everything.

Ear Worms

This was decently fun and I enjoyed the writer tossing in as many song lyrics as possible. However, outside of that gimmick, this wasn't earth-shattering by any means and could have used some narrative to really paint a scene.

Live RP VI-VIII

I could tell the writers were having a lot of fun, and Becky got to shine without being annoying. Konall got in some good lines as always. Todd was solid, if unspectacular. Max, however stole the show in his debut at the end and I was pretty happy with his stuff.

Through the Mirror Darkly

As Catrina posted this one, I'm assuming most of the narrative was hers? Either way, very good roleplay here. Catrina was well-written, the action was good, and I enjoyed this. I'd say Catrina was the star here, but Konall had some good lines as well. Becky was as she always is, which is decent, but a little much.

Dark World I

Oooh... things take a turn for the worst! Dopplegangers! I'm glad to see Vixen and Lapine get more spotlight as they were in the background for the live RPs. The hero/doppleganger fights were fun with some cute jokes. Vixen's top flying off and her looking hot was only so titillating as I have no idea what she looks like. I have no issues with a little sex appeal in my writing, but I wasn't sure of the point.
Aside from that, this was fun, advanced the plot - no real issues.

Lady and the Tramp... and Dash too!

Dash and Cat are the two strongest overall writers in the group from what I've read, and so this was the strongest roleplay in general. Catrina finally gets a good chance to show off her personality and character while Dash, who has been kicking ass all over the place, keeps doing just that. No real issues here - great rp.

Dark World II

Glad to see Vixen getting the bulk of the narrative here to show off her writing chops. That said, there are enough grammatical issues here to just comment that this needed another edit. But Vixen's dialogue was well done here and the pacing was nice and quick. Good, but this was a tad sloppy.

Take a Drink eveytime an - is used

This had a great, manic pace to it. The grammar was all over the place, but whatever. Although a late entry, this has a ton of work put into it and I was quite pleased with the end result. Dialogue was the high point here, a few lines were forced, but the banter was great - it never felt wooden at all. Good job.

A Heated Battle Between Good and Evil, Mating Rights: Dash v Dark

The sexual tension here with Cat was fun, this was well-written and got the plot across. I'd say "it was a little short" but considering how many rps Dash and Cat have been in, this has been a monumental effort!

Live RP IX: Coming back from Mirror World

This was really just a denouement and so was nice and got the band back together while tying everything up. Nothing really standing out here, but a necessary piece that was fun.

VOTING:

20 - Sebastian Dash

This was a VERY hard choice, but Dash not only put in a monumental effort, but he also wrote a strong, consistent character with high quality. When you’re doing a co-rp with six people or whatever, it’s very easy to get lost in the shuffle. Dash never did that, and was always in control and assertive during the Live RPs. In a nutshell, he active and not reactive.

19 - Konall and Catrina

Konall chewed the scenery everywhere he went with a great personality, the funniest lines of the week, and obvious hard work put into everything. Big dumb Viking is the oldest clichÉ in the world, but Konall’s writer pulled it off unapologetically and obviously had a lot of fun.

Catrina probably came across as the strongest character in all of this, and the writer obviously puts a lot of work into her. Very good characterization, the narrative was well-written, and just a solid.

18 - Kadlin

17 - Becky Joy

16 - Vixen

15 - Lapine

14 - Shamus Xtreme

13 - Todd Blackpaws

13 - Raw HIde

12 - Sir Fumblies

11 - Maximus

10 - Crabjesus

10- Awakensun

Awakensun was originally left off the voting since her bio wasn't up. Since it went up before Finale part I was out, Dave agreed to give her a review and points. yay

Voter comments: Gail's presence was fun and stuck to character, I would have liked to have seen more of her. However, her dialogue was extremely muted. If she's living out in the middle of the forest eating herbal brownies and not taking baths, she should have a really strong personality to match all of it. She doesn't have to do the "Woah, crazy man, I can see the music!" hippie stuff, but something distinctive in her speech patterns will help, as well as allow her to develop more character humour.

I'll give her ten points.

Kingdom of Loathing (KOL) is a (mostly) original online game that apparently has something to do with Asymmetric Publications, LLC, and something called a Jick, who probably copyrighted and trademarked the thing up the wahoozer. Wahoozer is a word I just made up. If you don't like it, bite me. And if you refuse to bite me go to . . . ANYWAY, this is the archive for an interactive writing game based on KOL, and a specific clan within- the Kingdom of KOL. Specific characters belong to their specific owners, specifically, unless specifically stated otherwise. This game was developed by Joshua A. Dexter, with rules based in part on Mercenary and Equinox. This is a non profit game done for entertainment purposes only. If a rash develops on your imagination, desist use immediately and consult a physician, psychologist, or 1-900 psychic for further assistance. KOL forums, store, entry at Answers, KOL's entry at Archive.org, and it's entry at Wikipedia, and KOL's own wiki. - JAD!
