Mission: Uncle Crimbo's Summertime Renaissance Southern Fair: A GROARING problem
Season 3, mission #5
MISSION INFORMATION

This is the out of character mission information and RP Notes for Uncle Crimbo's Summertime Renaissance Southern Fair: A GROARING problem.

It's our holiday mission - and we get to see some of the more recent additions to AIL really step it up in terms of adding to the mission. Plus the Crimbos and Renaissance Giant are both involved, so there's that. (This is also the first archive I'm doing after the boards were forcibly converted.)

We've got a special mission up for you for the winter holidays, players!

The new mission is up! - Mission #4: Uncle Crimbo's Summertime Renaissance Southern Fair: A GROARING problem

Remember: It's summer in the AIL world. I figure it's been two thirds of a year since our season two Holiday mission. Think of this as roughly July and our Holiday mission as November of last year.

A couple months since the Catbird mission, where the two camps supposedly came out of hiding and openly opposed each other.

This starts 2-3 weeks after the last mission. 3M.

We'll create a section for the new town (Las MexiCaliVada) in the library section at some point that will probably also touch on the Crimbo family and AIL's holiday traditions so far.

RP notes go HERE!

INFO

There's two mission goals, but this isn't a traditional "Split mission." You don't choose a quest. I'll explain what a "split mission" is again the next time we do one. (Or see RP notes from past missions.) I'll explain about "choosing a side" in a future post.

Notes on the first mission: Since it's set a few weeks after the Finale of the last mission, if you do a roleplay set right after the mission, you won't hear or know about this part until later.

Read the Rollover as it contains information on the town and how the adventurers/ player characters learn about this mission. The Council of Loathing is not issuing this mission. I think they will be a lil hush on it, and might even come across as complicit. I imagine they would suggest that nothing is wrong, probably, and maybe not to start trouble-making down there, "not that we really know what's up."

(That may or may not be true. It's up to us to figure that out as we roleplay. Fill in your own take on the Counci's handling of this if you want, too. That's just how I see it.)

Step 1: Investigate this town, Las MexiCaliVada. Which, from a handler's sense, means develop it. Bina and I talk more about the town in our library section and we'll invite you to add your input too.

Step 0: Finding and getting there! Before you can do that, though, your character has to learn about the mission. Father and Uncle Crimbo have sent gift baskets to various player and nonplayer characters. You'll have to use your best judgement to determine if your character got one and where those might be found. (And what you got in it.)

Once your character gets there, I'd like to avoid anyone walking into town and definitively proving it's either legitimate or a scam. You'll probably run into people who are suspicious and you'll probably run into those who think this is the greatest thing to ever hit the town.

Uncle Crimbo invited adventurers into town. If something is up behind the scenes (which is likely), he probably kept it pretty well hidden. If this is a legitimate deal, which is possible too, well, it'll still seem very suspicious and he's probably still up to something anyway, to be honest.

We could also define the Somber Six's role in this. Even if this is legitimate, they've been obvious about making power plays. Post here if you plan to use a Somber Six member. Not that you really need to ask permission, or even post here, but it might help to keep us all on the same page. If more than one person wants to use a Somber Six member, we can work something out more easily.

Remember, Somber Six members are MEANT to be LEGIT threats, capable of defeating one or even multiple heroes. They should get some wins over us as we go, especially early on. (But let's try to use some anyway, if we can.)

That's background information on this mission. I will post about choosing a side in a bit. Bina and I will also create a post on potential in-game mission awards and put it here. And I'll let you all know when we know more about the deadline (probably two months from now or so) and any awards. Ext.

Awards for "Uncle Crimbo's Summertime.." ext mission.. Post mission questions here!

We've got our first seven awards picked out! Let's cover a few basics on the awards first.

- As always, these don't influence your mission ranking, so they don't influence the Finale. They do, however, affect your 'season to date' total. Plus we cover who won what (and why). Where? On the scorecard, of course!
- Basically, winning an award will be worth either 2 or 3 points, depending on if the voter and I decide there's been enough activity for 3 point awards.
- Depending on how heavy competition is for these awards, some of them (at least one) will have a runner-up winner which will be worth a single point.
- Where there's discretion on who gets points for each award, I'll leave it up to the voter where possible. See individual awards for further details.

Greatest Plot twist: Give us that moment where the story changes. Give us a creative twist to the plot, something that surprises us but still makes sense. Or give us something that affects the mission, or puts the goal in a new light. Be ambitious with this and you could win an award and some points!

Best solo: Basically, a story that uses only player characters from one writer. Even if they use more than one of their main characters. Even if someone else writes the NPC parts.

Best co-write: Any story, regardless of structure, posted with player characters from two or more handlers. Synergy helps here. Of course.

Most Descriptive writing: This is the award for bringing the scenery to life. It might be through clever writing, or writing brilliant passages about the scenery or using multisensory descriptions. Just whoever is good at chewing the scenery, so to speak.

Top RP title: This goes to whoever posted the roleplay unless RP notes state credit goes to someone else. (If you have more than one of your characters, state who you want to get the point or we'll use our own discretion.)
Hint: The voter has admitted liking pun titles. Previous winner: KOKOL: Preventing a Cat-astrophe
Or self referential titles. Previous winner: Catrina, Aleena, Dash (Dramatic title here!!)

Funniest Moment: Any type of humor counts here. For longer funny bits, this might go to multiple player characters, which can of course include those playing the role of straight man.

"Stocking stuffer" award for the best use of a gift: This one goes hand in hand with the mission premise, and is meant to reflect the winter holiday gift giving season (even though it's summer in AIL). Uncle Crimbo and Father Crimbo are handing our gift baskets- see Rollover for more. But this could be ANY gift, even one you write in during a roleplay. Just make a clever, surprising, smart, unexpected or well written use of a gift and see if you can win!

That's it for NOW but let's get the board really hot so we can justify adding more for the mission!

I'll put together the mission notice to explain one. Questions go there, or in OOC, or just ya know PM me directly somehow.

I am hoping Bina and I can put together a section in the library section, but that's after we get the mission notice done.

Post your RP notes here!

(You know.. a VERy brief, OOC, non spoiler free summary of your RP, and anything the other players should know about it, even if it's something coming in a later rp, to make sure we do our best to maintain continuity.

(If you plan to use a key NPC, that usually goes under Mission Notice. If you're not sure if you should be using the NPC, ask me and we can figure something out.)

In "Comforts" we find Mary and Wildfall heading back home after the stressful events that unfolded at the force field and the battles afterwards. Mary is doing some reflecting and Wildfall is doing his best to protect her and reassure her.

Becky and SnowCatCuties's first of two co-writes - archive copy
Posted by: Becky Joy

Hello, Mary. Good to see you.

SnowCat Cuties meets Becky Joy and her Goblin friends, Green and Goblina. They talk about candy, eat some, and talk about the incident from the 3M mission with the shopkeeper, who we saw meet Snow last mission.

Snow agrees to meet the shop keeper in the future for dinner. Then Snow, Becky and the Goblins go out for lunch! Also: SnowCat gets credit for the clever RP name - Sweet Reunion. She gets credit for the subtitle too!

Dash and Jen's only co-write - archive copy
Posted by: Dash

I'm back again.

This time it's a Jen/ Dash post.

Picking up after last mission finale, it's titled "Relaxation and Procrastination."

Basically, they're dealing with the effects of the Procrastination potion, which seems to be especially harmful and potentially dangerous to Jen. It makes them lazy and want to put off random things- like Dash not wanting to even switch to his other leg while walking. Or Jen showing no interest in eating anymore.

It's a lil silly, kinda dark and WELL worth reading! (You shoulda read it before you read the spoilers here.. duh.)

Luckily, it looks like Catt shows up at the end.

Mary Kate and Wildfall's second of three co-writes - archive copy
Posted by: Wildfall

It's titled "Kiddo No More!" - yes, the quotation marks are a part of the title. Well worth reading, just for the opening.

This story starts out with Mary Kate facing down five Somber Six members from the last piece - although turns out it's a nightmare. Wildfall's there to embrace her when she awakens. That morning (well, afternoon actually), they wake up in each other's arms and decide to get breakfast.. er.. lunch. There's a little miscommunication between the two but they clear it up and reminense over their past.

They also decide they have enough food that they can stay at home for a few days (weeks, months, whatever) and recover from the brutal battle with the Somber Six.

In "An Unexpected Surprise - A new friend or two", Snow leaves the sweet shop. Uses a gadget to find a campsite which attracts some kids. One sees his lost cat. Snow takes him there to find she had given birth to a litter and takes them to the child's house and in return is given a cat. Snow accepts but will collect later and she goes to set up camp.

In "Stew Beginnings" we find our adventurers in limbo after the very suddenly and strangely ended battle at the Spookyraven Mansion. Iris goes to explore the other parts of Seaside Town and fend for herself, and Mary and Wildfall explore more territory in their newly-declared love. A few gifts are exchanged, and then they all decide to go to Market for food and supplies, and meet up!

Becky Joy and SnowCatCuties's final co-write - archive copy

So here's a new one.

With the rather short title: Red's Alert - The cliche forest and the riddle of the Food feast

My title although Snow helped, hehe.

Starts with them finishing dinner with the owner of the candy shop from Snow's other stories so far. Then the four keep talking. Eventually they decide to head to Degrassi. Snow stayed behind to pack up her campsite and to create a cart so the others could ride in.

She found 'em a while after being attacked by random adventurer archetypes in the forest. They stole Red's lunch, so Snow and Red took off to catch them. They got Red's lunch back.

One of his many, many lunches. Also, there was strange canned laughter (think sitcom) going on in the forests, so they decided it'd be wise to hurry on to Degrassi.

That's it. Well, maybe there's more. Read it and find out.

In the story "The Degrassi Files", Mary Kate and Wildfall hash out a few things on their way to Degrassi in search of the still missing Todd and Fahari. They decide to get a room at the Inn and to get the cheapest room available but it only has one bed so they find themselves sharing the bed and the room.

The latest co-write, "Snow days: Days spent in Degrassi!", focuses on SnowCat and Becky but we see a couple PC's guest star as well!

SnowCatCuties, Becky Joy and her Goblin traveling companions arrive in town and decide to set up camp rather than stay at an inn. Then instead of setting up tents, Snow decides it'd be easier to build a roof to go over her trailer. While shopping, she ran into a strange guy who seemed to say the same thing over and over. She ends up buying the materials and paint for her roof.

Some time (days?) later, Becky is skipping and hopping. She runs into Mary Kate O'Toole, who asks Becky if she's seen Fahari or Todd. Becky rambles a bit, but can't offer any help. Wildfall's there too. Although Mary is befuddled and a little annoyed by Becky's antics, she hopes to meet Becky again someday.

Then we end with more comedy (Snow's 'potjie pie' is too hot for Red to handle). We end it with them finally finding their Crimbo "gifts" about a week after originally arriving in Degrassi - or so!

Mary Kate, Koumori and Wildfall's only co-write - archive copy

In "Playful Times For Mary and Wildfall, To Degrassi and Back featuring Koumori", Mary and Wildfall get drenched in a rainstorm and upon arriving in their hotel room, they strip out of the wet clothes which leads to some fun time for them. After arriving home, they open Crimbo presents and find a couple for Koumori and decide to go searching for him, find him and give him the gifts and are teleported to an unknown destination.

Wilde and I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

RP notes with "Holiday Dash."

The very short version although it is a pretty long co-write.

Dash, Jen and Aleena discuss stuff on the way to the lil town. Hopefully funny stuff. Then Jester King attacks.

Later, we find Mary, who was teleported in her last co-write with Koumori and Wildfall to just outside the town- only Mary winds up alone. She helps out Aleena, Dash and Jen against the Jester King and the four walk to town.

Mary wants go to her own way; she and Dash get into a heated argument before she storms off.

All in all, it's a really fun co-write which puts all four in town.

Becky, Blackeagle, Luna and SnowCatCuties - archive copy
Posted by: Becky Joy

A co-write with Becky Joy, Luna (formerly Spaghettigirl - see story), Blackeagle and SnowCatCuties is finally up, titled "The traitorous twists and turns on the trail."

It's a long one! Starts with Snow refilling sweets in Lil Canadia. She hunts turtles with Red and Green. Red has an incident with the forest. Goblina shops. Becky and Darson grab dinner.

Along the way they pick up Spaghettigirl who has two familiars- a Crimbo P.R.E.S.S.I.E and a rock- we don't yet know the rock is one of her familiars.

During that night, Sgirl enters a pyramid in the middle of the night and blacks out- or maybe she just dreamed it?

When SGirl wakes up, she believes her name is Luna. (So it basically is.) Who knows what other changes we'll see in her?

The next morning, with SGirl still sleeping (we learn about her name change later), the group sets off and runs into an overturned cart. They go to help - but get ambushed by the thugs there. But John and Sherri- that's Blackeagle- show up to help.

Snow gets hurt- a shoulder injury from an arrow. (Glad it wasn't to her knee.) She doesn't seem to want to see a doctor. Blackeagle take off on their horses and Snow and the rest head to town.

It's even longer than the write-up indicates- but hopefully funny!

I told Mary I'd do her RP notes, so I'll throw in Snow's too.

SnowCatCuties also posted one named "A Sexy Stranger" where she meets a mysterious, strange doctor Valour who helps her with her shoulder injuries and offers to go with her.

Then in "Mary Sees Double," Mary meets a girl that looks just like her while exploring the streets of the tiny town. We FINALLY get to see the town in this lovely little piece!

The other girl- Diana Lynn - is from the Eastern Side of South Ireland. (Mary's from the West.) And the two look just alike too! Just dressed differently. Diana is a dancer who stays at a house with other dancers, which she invites Mary to.

The two stop by to meet Uncle Crimbo, who is nearly drunk already. He can't believe the sight of the two and almost passes out - well actually he does pass out.

The two then head across the street to the house Diana stays at, where they laugh over the incident.

I have to really say this is a good read though! I'm very proud of Bina, who wrote this basically overnight and got an amazing story out of it. Her description of the town and Mary's journey is especially strong and the plot twist with the twin is super cute.

Anyway, go read both stories, they're both pretty good. Especially Mary's. But Snow's is good too. I also liked the doctor in the SnowCat piece, and I look forward to reading more about both NPC's - Snow's Dr and Mary's new friend!

Scorecard - archive copy
Posted by: Dash

Hello, everyone.

With lots of help and encouragement from Mary Kate's handler, I was able to get the Finale posted, less than a week after the Prelude was posted.

So we're up and moving, so to speak! Be sure to read the Finale and its prelude before you read this or the Rollover for the new mission.

Full mission title (and I do mean full): Uncle Crimbo's Summertime Renaissance Southern Fair: A GROARING problem

We had a solid showing of fifteen roleplays for the mission which, honestly, is low for a holiday themed mission, but still very healthy.

The awards don't affect mission ranking, but do affect season ranking. I'll list them with the winners, so let's get to business.

Ready?

Jarlsboris Wildfall and Mary Kate O'Toole tie for first!

Congratulations to myself and Bina, cause we worked hard for this one, earning Mary and Wildfall 22 points each. A big focus for their stories was their evolving relationship, which is a story that got big praise from the voter.

I've thought about the relationship between the two, of course, but their story is hard to define. It's very realistic in that way, I suppose. They flirt, fight, argue, agree, disagree. There's jealousy and over-protectiveness and love and kindness.

And a very real air of sexual tension and history between the two.

Their stories start in the aftermath of the last mission and we get insight into the nightmares of both Wildfall and Mary. They search for Todd & Fahari and hook up with Koumori, who ends up teleporting them to the distant Seaside Town. On top of that, Mary's split up from the others and joins Dash, Aleena and Jen in a battle!

In fact, Koumori teleporting our heroes won the two-point award for Greatest Plot Twist for Mary, Wildfall and Koumori! It was in the roleplay titled "Playful Times For Mary and Wildfall" and the idea of using the picture to teleport was foreshadowed in the Rollover. Only Koumori was able to take advantage of it but he took Wildfall and Mary with him!

But like I said, the real highlight for Wildfall and Mary was the story of their relationship and the ups and downs of it. So it's fitting that Wildfall and Mary Kate win best co-write for the Degrassi Files. Let me quote the voter here: It was the highlight of the Mary Kate/Wildfall saga for this time, where everything came to a head. Two points.

Wildfall and Mary were also a part of Stew Beginnings which wins runner up for "Stocking Stuffer" - best use of a gift! Although it wasn't a traditional gift, the voter is counting the meal Iris offered to Wildfall and Mary as one. Wildfall enjoyed it, Mary wasn't hungry, but gets the point anyway. The voter mentioned that "Wildfall and Mary Kate continue a journey through being a cute couple (in Stew Beginnings), which is an enjoyable read."

So Wildfall gets 22 points, two 2-point awards and a 1-point award!

27 points for Wildfall

But what about Mary?

Mary was a part of the runner-up for Best Co-write as well! Snow Days: Days spent in Degrassi. It's a fairly big piece that focuses on Becky and Snow, but the two split up during the middle which is where Becky runs into Mary Kate. The voter praised the story for many silly moments and some of those came during the charming section where Mary runs into Becky.

So for Mary, 22 points, two 2-point awards and two more single point awards!!

28 points for Mary We have another tie up next. SnowCatCuties and Becky Joy tie for third!

Becky and Snow were together for most of the stories, although they split up here and there during co-writes and Snow also got a couple solos up. The voter mentioned "consistent fun" throughout their pieces.

During "Red's Alert," the voter mentions Becky and Snow have a "ton of surprisingly good synergy" and called their co-writes "fun and snappy pieces."

They also won a couple awards together!

Becky and Snow win Funniest moment for Becky eating a warhead, which Snow had offered to her as a gift during A Sweet reunion. Voter Ichiro called it "just delightful." 2 points!

As mentioned for Mary, Snow Days: Days spent in Degrassi won runner up for best co-write for Mary, SnowCat and Becky. This was a fun one. The opening and closing were both Becky and Snow but during the middle, Snow has a mini solo while Becky shares a scene where she meets Mary Kate, who is looking for Todd Blackpaws and Fahari. About a week passes in this one.

In fact, the voter refers to time as "sorta (. . .) this amorphous concept." He referred to it as "neat way to put things in (sic) perceptive of how Becky sees the world." Interesting way to look at it! One bonus point for that!

Finally, Becky and Snow win the stocking stuffer award for Best use of a gift! Since Snow's gift of a warhead to Becky was the "driving point" of the roleplay. Two more points!

Becky wins 21 points and two 2-point awards and a single point award.

26 points for Becky!

Snow wins even more cause she also took two awards, one for each solo!

An Unexpected Surprise wins Snow "best Solo" for being "real cute and fun" and bringing "a smile" to the voter's face.

A Sexy Stranger wins Most Descriptive writing, specifically for "that beginning description."

So that's two points for each, for a total of four more.

So SnowCat gets 21 points, plus four two point awards and a bonus point for runner up!

SnowCat earns 30 points total!

Next up: Iris takes fifth place!

Although the voter wanted to see more of her, he praised her unique writing style, calling it a "very captivating way of writing, reading very much like it is directly from her mind, while still being third person." High praise from our voter and very well deserved. Iris was present for not one but two co-writes with Mary Kate and Wildfall.

She won two awards from those co-writes.

We already mentioned that Stew Beginnings took runner up for Stocking Stuffer's Best use of a gift award for the meal (stew) which Iris shared with Wildfall. Mary didn't want any. One for that.

Then Iris won a few more awards of her own! She gets credit for the title Stew Beginnings which win her Best RP title, managing to stuck out as a pun title among several strong pun and joke rp titles this time around. That's worth two more points.

Then, Iris's opening in Stew Beginnings earned her runner up for Most Descriptive writing! Ichiro called it "super strong, (evoking) a lot of knowledge towards what was happening." The voter specifically stated, "that beginning description is what stood out" to him.

Iris takes a well earned 20 points along with 2-point awards and a couple runner ups for two more points.

24 points for Iris!

Sebastian Dash and Jen tie for sixth place.

They weren't as active as in past missions and had strong competition but they still managed to hold their own.

The first co-write had them suffering the effects of a Procrastination potion from the Giant.

The voter praised it for doing "a lot to establish something is wrong." He also stated, "Its use of metaphor was fun, and was overall enjoyable."

Then Dash and Jen skipped forward to fight with Mary and Aleena vrs. Jester King of Beasts later in roleplaying without much mention of the time in between. But the Finale and next mission Rollover hint at what happened there.

It was the writing of their first piece, Relaxation and Procrastination, which won runner up awards for Funniest Moment: "The dialog was tickling, even if the overall piece was very somber."

Jen takes 19 points plus a point for the runner up spot above.

Princess Jen earns 20 points.

Since Dash posted it, Relaxation and Procrastination earns Dash 1 point for Runner-up for Best RP title: "Something about the rhyme is very soothing."

So for Dash, that's 19 points plus two single points winners.

Sebastian Dash earns 21 points.

The next four slots are all split between ties as well.

Blackeagle and Luna tie for 8th place. They were in the massive traitorous twists and turns on the trail with Becky Joy and SnowCatCuties. This is the roleplay where Spaghettigirl assumes her new identity as Luna!

The voter wants to see more of both!

18 points for Blackeagle.
18 points for Luna!

Finally, wrapping the scorecard up and tied at tenth place are Koumori and Aleena.

Although the voter likes both characters, the lack of activity might have held them back a little.

Aleena earns 17 points.

Koumori was the driving force behind Best plot twist for the teleport which he initiated in "Playful Times For Mary and Wildfall". That gets him 2 points.

Along with the 17 points he gets for tenth place . . .

Koumori earns 19 points total!

And that wraps us up for the list so far, which means it's time to update the season totals!

Season 3 rankings so far

#1) Wildfall - 133 - Wildfall maintains his lead although Mary Kate closed the gap by a single point!

#2) Mary Kate - 115 - Mary Kate edges up from third place to second!

#3) Sassy Snake - 102 - Sassy missed the mission and slides down a spot.

#4) Becky Joy - 93 - A powerful mission showing (tying for second place) shoots Becky up to the fourth spot!

#5) Dash - 87 - Formerly tied for 8th, Dash now sits alone at the number five spot!

#6) Aleena - 85 - Aleena tied for last place but it let her hold onto the number six spot.

#7) Blackeagle - 83 - Blackeagle jump up a bit from the tenth spot to lucky number seven, edging out Cattaras by a point..

#8) Cattaras Whiteclaw - 82 - Not being active hurt Cat, who plummets from four to eight.

#9) Jen - 78 - Jen moves up a couple spots and has a comfy lead over Todd, who also missed the mission.

#10) Todd Blackpaws - 73 - Inactivity also moved down Todd, who falls from five to the ten spot.

#11) (tied) Koumori - 66 - The voter's favorite bat-creature moves up a spot and is now tied for 11.

#11) (tied) Shelldor - 66 - Formerly tied for 8. Now in a tie for the 11th spot.

#13) Catrina Whiteclaw - 54 - Not active, but still holding onto the 13th position for the season so far.

#14) SnowCatCuties - 48 - This mission sees her soar in rankings from 19th - the last spot last mission - to number 14!

#15) Fumblies - 46 - Not active last mission but should be for the next.

#16) Iris - 45 - A small jump from her former position at 18.

#17) Alys - 42 - Still at the same spot.

#18) Luna - 38 - Jumped up a single spot here.

#19) Fahari - 31 - Falls to the last place. I doubt this will last if she gets active again!

That's it for this mission! Thanks Ichiro for your hard work voting and congratulations everyone!

Get to work for our next mission, let's make it even better!
