CatBird: Search or Rescue - Season Three, Mission 1
Rollover and Finale written by Aleena, Catrina, Blackeagle, Dash, Mary Kate, Sassy Snake and Shelldor
(misison logo by J (Dash/ Wildfall/ Becky))

Historical recap: The story of Adventures in Loathing is now a sprawling epic, starting in the shadow of a legendary clan war and focusing on the major clan (at the time), the Kingdom of KOL, and their conflicts with the penguin mafia (where they got their first hint of the Somber Six) and the now-fallen Knob Goblin kingdom. It took our heroes to Hey Daze and back (twice), to the distant futuristic land of Honorburg and the alternate dimension of the so-called Mirrorverse, a twisted 'opposite world' to our own, and to more familiar KOL locations as well.

Some adventurers from early stories (Catrina and Dash as well as Prince Blahking, now a NPC) are still around and new adventurers have joined them over the missions, from earlier missions like Wildfall, Sassy Snake and Aleena to more later additions, such as Alys, Blackeagle and Shelldor.

Season 1 ended on a war with the Knob Goblins, which eventually lead to the corruption of Catrina and Kadlin. Catrina takes over the Knob Goblin Kingdom and Kadlin, seduced by the dark power of a glaive with a cursed spirit inside, eventually siezes control and threatens the entire world.

Eventually, under the looming threat of multiple disasters (most of which were potentially world ending), the heroes, rogues and even gods of the world united to confront Kadlin, resulting in the the death of both her and her heroic brother Konall. The Adventurers were left to try to deal with unresolved issues and the mystery of a strange bugbear shaped ship which seemed to have arrived from another world, setting the stage for Season three. . .

The Story so far: Season 3 started with the Penguin Mafia in firm control of Seaside Town, which they seized during the issues with Kadlin. Adventurers were divided into two goals; work with the Council to get the Penguins to agree to leave, or attempt to sneak into town to drive them out by force. The Penguin Mafia claimed to want help shutting down the random portals which were still opening around the Kingdom. After a confrontation between all three groups, Wildfall helped the Council and Penguins come to an acceptable compromise, which had the penguins giving up control of Seaside Town in exchange for some seats on a new Council of Loathing board. Oh, and the portal problem was dealt with largely off camera by Alsy and Aleena. Thanks gals!

That sets the scene for the Penguins to be partially in control of the Council as it again requests assistance from local adventurers for a local Kingdom problem.

This is the first time I've tried starting the archive before the mission is actually over. I'm hoping to do this for future missions that reach at least ten roleplays, so if something happens to the main forum, I'm more likely to have most of it backed up. (The threshold of ten roleplays is because I format pieces with nine or less roleplays differently.) Ultimately though it still ended up taking a few months to get up. In fact, as I write this, we're working on the Finale for the next mission. Oops. Not the archive, just the Finale.

Additional update: As I edit this page, we're in the NEXT mission, Mansion's Maniac Mysteries. To be fair, I was off on a RL family trip for two weeks!

Another thing that sets it apart is the sheer number of pieces in this one. We got 27 pieces during roleplaying for this mission! Meaning solo roleplays and co-writes. Duh.) That, obviously, is quite a bit. The previous high was like, 24 pieces during Holiday. Another great mission worth reading.

It isn't just the number of roleplays; this one had it all! We see a brand new player to AIL in the form of Mary Kate while Blackeagle, who debut during last mission's Finale part II, make their roleplaying debut. The mission is also split into two goals, with each mission getting enough attention that it could have been successful as its own mission. That's without counting a pair of awesome Becky Joy/ Sassy Snake co-writes "crossover" roleplays! We've got a mix of veteran AIL characters, with Sebastian Dash, Catrina Whiteclaw and Aleena joining up, and we've got more recent additions like Shelldor and Alys here too! There's co-writes and solos, and short pieces and some pretty long pieces in here.

The Council have requested local adventurers aid the Council by tracking down (KOL creature) the Toot Oriole, who has been missing since the Season 2 Finale, as it turns out. That's one quest. Meanwhile, during the Rollover, Catrina, Dash and Aleena are ambushed and kidnapped, so the other quest is KOKOL's request to track them down and rescue them.

These two goals lead to the most roleplayed for mission in AIL history to date!

Feature character: Mary Kate O'Toole debuts! What a strong debut it is, too! She starts in six co-writes with Wildfall, including their debut in Old (young) friends reunited! They're back together when Wildfall meets Mary's father, and they spend four more co-writes with either Alys, Todd or both. Mary is a very fun character and you can see her wonderful little personality quirks starting even in her earliest stories here. It's fun seeing another figure from Wildfall's past as well as meeting her old friend, Captain Horatio. A very strong debut mission secured her the featured character spot!
Co feature character: Sassy Snake is all over the boards again- and this time it's finally for a mission that gets votes! She is in an amazing five roleplays plus two more with Becky Joy- and one of those is mostly a Sassy Snake epic story. She introduced a wide range of memorable new characters - and Blorf- even as she gives generous screen time to her collection of five NPC's from earlier missions.
Co feature character: Blackeagle (the team of John and Sherri) also debut, although they don't have the length of stories of Sassy or Mary. They do manage to pull off three short roleplays as well as a co-write with Becky Joy, and again, it's a good read as we see them adjusting to this world. Oh, and this mission sees their rivalry with Blake continue from their debut in the last mission's Finale. Watch 'em craft sticks and wrestle the Gorlock!
Jarlsboris Wildfall - or just Wildfall- benefits greatly from Mary's presence! He starts with a powerful short piece where he's sold his and Summer's house. Then he is in all of Mary's stories before getting a co-write with just Wildfall and Todd, a classic combination which earned the two a Best Chemistry award in a previous mission.
Todd Blackpaws is the second player character Mary meets. Todd spends a lot of time in the background to Mary and Wildfall although he does get a chance to tell her about his past, growing up in a cathouse. Later, he and Wildfall are off on their own, where they run into a couple of. . . strange NPC's, Wilma and Gina. Sha-wing.
Cattaras Whiteclaw and Jen both show up early and late in the mission, scoring a big presence during roleplaying, the Rollover and of course, the Finale! Although they explore their relationship a bit and interact with Sir Fumblies and Becky Joy, most of their story this time around focuses on their battle with former Elite 8 members - especially Daisuke, Cattaras's former master.
Shelldor tripped a ninja! Oh, and Bob and he fought ninjas, boarded a pirate ship, and met John the Trapper. Quite a good run in spite of showing up fairly late in the mission.
Queen Aleena undergoes a devastating loss in this piece, something which will set the story for the future of AIL for missions to come! She's plays a key part in the Rollover.
Sebastian Dash is back! This time, it's Dash and his allies, Aleena and Catrina Whiteclaw, who need to be saved. It's a very different role for the original AIL hero, to say the least.
Catrina Whiteclaw, Dash and Aleena were missing the last mission. Well, they're back in a big way, searching for Catrina's lost kit (child) and quickly being kidnapped by unknown sources.
Becky Joy joined Cattaras and Jen on an attack, went on her own (with NPC's) to try to rescue someone, joined up with Sassy Snake and capped things off with Blackeagle! Silly gal. Busy silly gal.
Sir Fumblies shows up early and even gets to play the hero, saving Cattaras, Becky and Jen at one point. We get to see him interact with Blackeagle too.
Alys hangs out with Todd, Wildfall and Mary. She even breaks the 4th wall at one amusing point. Cute little stories from her.

He's part of the initial assault against Dash, Catrina and Aleena. Later battles Cattaras and Jen on his own, which is where things start to become really interesting.

Meanwhile in South Degrassi, Icy and Bristle are getting to know each other over a romantic date - which Rayvon ruins, interrupting to unsuccessfully argue to the two that she's concerned about Sassy's state of mind.

Blackeagle, The trip Blackeagle yes (KOKOL) During their debut, John and Sherri (Blackeagle) are given a pair of horses by Sir Fumblies and sent to the Ninja Village to train. Along the way, they find a couple of potentially useful tree branches and consider making knives out of them.

Smooth Bard: How hairy (Todd)... Mary Kate, Todd and Wildfall no (Search) Wildfall tries to talk his way out of the situation when he and Mary Kate find themselves surrounded by Knob Goblin thugs - but Mary's temper threatens that. Fortunately, Todd Blackpaws shows up, using his music to charm their way out of a fight. They're appreciative, although Wildfall is less so when Todd introduces himself to Mary - and starts flirting with her. Wildfall mentions Todd's relationship with Lapine to Mary, who questions Todd flirting with her. After Todd tries to explain, Mary and Wildfall are off to Seaside Town!
Sassy and the Lyre by the Fire Sassy Snake no (Search) While Blorf recovers, Sassy discovers four Crimbo Elves, including one who "lies" all the time and Tickle, who likes to tickle people. Marketplace Mary Kate, Todd and Wildfall no (Search) Wildfall and Mary are surprised to find Todd waiting for them at the marketplace, having figured on them doing some shopping. Mary's also shocked to find out Todd grew up in a cathouse. Sassy Snake: Dinner at Father Crimbo's. Sassy Snake nope (Search) Over a delicious dinner with Father Crimbo, Sassy and Linger learn about Jack, the rogue elf who has poisoned Blorf and others. Sassy and Linger split ways with Blorf. The elves Lyre and Tickle agree to guide them in their search for the Toot, which takes them to a mysterious "O," headed by Rodrigo, a mage whom Sassy saved from slavers in the past. Sassy is then ambushed by Rayvon's arrows while Tickle and Lyre unsuccessfully chase after Jack.

Also included is an earlier interlude with Jack and Rayvon, set in Degrassi.

Wildfall Meets Mary's Father Mary Kate and Wildfall yes (Search) Wildfall and Mary bum around the 'help wanted' board in Seaside Town, making fun of it before heading home. On their way home, Wildfall and Mary run into Mary's father, who scolds Mary for going outside the town. Once things cool down and Mary's father remembers Wildfall, he asks Wildfall to housesit since Mary's family is going back on sea again soon. However, Mary talks her father into agreeing to let Mary stay behind with Wildfall so he can mentor her as an adventurer.
Final(?) Catfight! Cattaras and Jen no (KOKOL) Cattaras and Jen battle the masked Daisuke! It doesn't look like he wants to survive the fight but before Cattaras can finish him off, the Feline Goddess appears, warning Cattaras the the mask it the enemy, not Daisuke. . .
Into Rayvon's Darkness Becky and Sassy no (Crossover) Things take a dark turn for Sassy when Tickle comes back with wine he found and a dead rabbit served to him by none other than Rayvon! Turns out Tickle's alcoholic. Sassy warns him not to but he shares the rabbit with Lyre and downs the bottle of wine by himself. That night he sneaks off. Sassy and Lyre find him hanging out with Rayvon, who has convinced Tickle that Sassy is bad for the elves. Lyre decides to stay with Tickle. When Sassy tries to take the sleeping elves with her, Rayvon threatens her with a knife!

Sassy heads back to camp, where she and Linger decide to head down the mountains, but they're awakened during the night by a loud crashing sound. They rush to find the "O" destroyed with Rayvon and her elves trapped inside. Ohwell! With no "O" to guard, Rodrigo joins them and they run into the strange ice walls, which even Linger can't push down. Linger's massive brother Boulder shows up and unseals the ice wall- only to reseal it when Linger refuses to stay. Thankfully, with the magic seal on the ice wall broken, Rodrigo is able to burn a tunnel through for them.

They then come across Becky Joy and company under assault from snow ninjas affected by the darkness! Linger chases them off, Becky faints from the exhaustion and the two groups join up and make camp past the base of the mountain.

Wildfall comforts her and the two run into Alys and discuss the Council mission to find the Toot Oriole. The next morning, John and Sherri get their assignment- rescue three missing Loathing Kingdom citizens. (Dash, Aleena and Catrina.) They set out along with their "prankster guide" horses. They then face off against two more bugbears to free Aleena - but she's stuck in a mindless fury! Dash attempts to contact Aleena, only to end up facing down with a bugbear leader (?) instead on a strange, dystopian mental plane.
Adventure Party Alys, Mary Kate, Todd and Wildfall no (Search) It's nothing but fun, jokes and teasing in the first roleplay to bring all four together! Todd, Mary Kate and Wildfall are out to get the scoop from the Council on the Toot. They wonder what a double decker couch is. Alys joins them as they talk to Mary's old family friend, the debuting Captain Horatio. After much teasing and a little 4th wall leaning, it ends up with Wildfall and Todd going down to the forest while Alys and Mary will board the ship, all searching for the Toot!
Sassy goes Camping Becky and Sassy no (Crossover) Sassy Snake and Becky Joy have set up camp for the night at the base of the mountain, so it's time to talk, if not relax! Becky's buddies and Sassy's squad fill each other in on their missions and troubles so far. They also hear Linger's smaller brother roaring in the distance, after which Becky finds out Linger's name is Belinda, to Becky's amusement. They then split ways, with Red staying with the ninjas on the mountain and the others heading to Degrassi to split up for their individual missions.
Better late then never? Shelldor no (Search) Shelldor's finally got Bob looking for the Toot! Bob, Shelldor and his bird familiars fight normal snow ninjas before finding safety in John the Trapper's cabin. Safely and warmth!

After their first night of work, they take a late night walk and get ambushed by Blake and later, double pistol master Mimi!

Becky helps the two escape after an exciting battle. Although they're quite confused by Becky, they agree to travel with Becky and her Knob Goblin Green in their quest to save the missing trio.

Sassy finds the Oriole's Nest. Sassy Snake no (Search) Finally back in Degrassi, Sassy and Linger find Bristle and Icy at a new pub called The Oriole's Nest, opened as a gathering spot for adventurers looking for the Toot Oriole, of course. They meet the pub owner who calls himself "Ruffle Feathers." After catching up and getting a good night's rest, Sassy and the others (not Ruffle) decide to head to the woods in search for the Toot.
Interlude Cattaras and Jen no (KOKOL) Things are heating up a bit between Cattaras and Jen - but they have to settle things with Daisuke, who seems to be on their side for the time being, united in their desire to save Catrina and her/ Daisuke's son.
Wild and Todd's Excellent Adventure Todd and Wildfall nope (Search) As Wildfall and Todd make their way to Distant Woods, the two discuss the recent events concerning Mary, Alsy and Captain Horatio. That's when they come across a small set of huts in the forest as well as the very . . . interesting. . . pairing of Gina and Wilma, who claim to not be time travellers from the future (which neither Todd or Wildfall said anything about to begin with). The two talk about searching for a Golden Newb they'd read about in history class.

Hilarity ensues. Totally excellent!

Finale 1/ 3: Setting the scene Alys, Blackeagle, Catrina, Dash, Mary Kate, Sassy Snake and Shelldor yes We flashback to the Toot during the Season 2 finale where we find out he had a vision of the threats to the world- and a vague hint of the bugbear invasion that comes after! The flashback is broken down into multiple parts with the Toot and his student, Tor the Toot.

Aside from the flashback, Mary meets with Captain Horatio on his ship and helps Alice with sea sickness. Also, Bob leaves John the Trapper's cozy cabin and ends up on the ship, where Mary yells at him to be more productive. Then the ship chases after a mysterious oriole who flies by. Catrina, Dash and Aleena rest deep in the caves as they attempt to escape the bugbear prison. Sassy Snake and Becky meet up but go their own ways for their individual assignments. Becky joins up with Blackeagle, Fumblies and other for a meeting. Wildfall, Todd, Wilma and Gina discover the Toot being pursued by the demon Larry while Cattaras and Daisuke try to convince Blahking that Daisuke can be trusted to help track down and save Catrina and her allies.

Finale 2 /3: The search is on! Blackeagle, Catrina, Dash, Mary Kate, Sassy Snake and Shelldor N/A The action continues building steam. Cattaras and Jen try to explain to a reluctant Daisuke that the Morlencir ship is the best way to investigate the shield around the bugbear hideaway, although the ship is confronted by defensive measures when Jen tries to probe the shield. After Bristle informs Sassy of the sad fate of Sassy's mother, Sassy's snake ally Serpentina warns Sassy of trouble in Nearby Woods. Hearing battle, Sassy and her squad rush in, ready for a fight. Elsewhere, Sir Fumblies informs Blackeagle, Becky and others that he's found out former Elite 8 are working with the strange new alien bugbears. He sets up a squad to head south to investigate. After Becky and Blackeagle take on some thugs harassing the locals, the squad later sees a Morlencir ship in the distance explode under attack!

Also: When Captain Horatio's ship decides to make landfall to search for the oriole they'd been following, Shelldor tricks Bob into volunteering for the landing squad. Mary chooses a lazy Bob, a slightly seasick Alys (who's still getting her land legs back) and two young sailors (Omar and Naomi) to accompany her in their search for the Toot, which takes them to Nearby Woods. Todd, Wildfall, Wilma and Gina confront the demon Larry as it chases the Toot Oriole with Todd outsmarting the demon so they can escape. Later, Sassy and her squad (Icy, Bristle and Linger the troll) confront the demon as it chases the Toot. It ignores them and they come across Wildfall.

Finale 3 / 3: Heading south Aleena, Dash, Todd and Shelldor N/A Each of our quests hits an explosive, exciting conclusion! Tor the Toot offers to help Bob (with Shelldor), Mary Kate, Alys, Omar and Naomi find the Toot Oriole. Aleena deals with the aftereffects of her cysuit being infected- and warns Dash his might have been infected as well. In a flashback, Wilma and Gina encourage Todd and Wildfall in their quest to stop the demon Larry before the four run into troubles in the Black Forest. Shelldor reflects on a half-remembered memory. Wildfall, Sassy, Brist, Icy and Linger split up. Fumblies Mobile Command runs into Kwadlin, so Becky, Blackeagle, and the mage Zap split apart to continue investigating the strange explosion.

Then it all comes down to a couple of climactic battles. When Aleena engineers an explosive escape from the bugbear force field for herself, Dash and Catrina, their allies are there to help them battle the bugbear forces - but it might take a little trickery to win the day. Meanwhile, Sassy Snake, Mary Kate, Wildfall and others battle Larry the demon over the Toot Oriole! But even if they win, one of them will still have to earn the honor of accompanying the Toot back to the Council for a reward.
