Historical recap: The Penguin Mafia's involvement in AIL dates back to the very first Rollover with the first hint of the Somber Six showing up in a penguin villa not long after. Early missions were dominated by clashes with the Knob Goblin kingdom, with occasional trips to the mysterious island and Hey Daze along the way. The Season ended with the Knob Goblins invading Seaside Town and trying to burn it to the ground. The attempts were partially successful, but the Council later recovered and expanded Seaside Town. Meanwhile, Catrina Whiteclaw is manipulated so that her dark side takes over, driving her to seduce King MTiger to impregnate herself. She immediately left King Mtiger and took over the Knob Goblin Kingdom, bringing along several former KOKOL allies. Catrina redubbed it the Feline Empire. Among those to join her was Kadlin Bearsmasher, who eventually took over the Feline Empire, eventually leading to an open revolt against Kadlin. With Kadlin's death, the Knob Goblins were left without a proper name, without a leader and in total chaos. During Kadlin's takeover, she had Slit kidnap Catrina's kit in order to help gain control over Daisuke, whom they also equipped with the ultra-rare spooky hockey mask which made Daisuke stronger, faster, tougher . . . and more obedient.

During the chaos surrounding Kadlin's death, the Penguins seized control of Seaside Town as the Kingdom barely survives a world ending selection of scenarios.

The Story so far: The penguins were eventually forced to relinquish command of the town, but in exchange, are given partial control over the Council. Later, Catrina found her still-missing kit, but she, Sebastian Dash and Aleena were ambushed and teleported. . . . somewhere. Meanwhile, with penguin members now on the Council of Loathing, their first call to adventurers was to find the Toot, who had been missing since the end of Season 2, and bring him to the Council for a meeting. Ultimately, after the Toot is saved from Larry the demon, Sassy Snake is the one the Toot goes with to see the Council while Dash, Catrina and Aleena are rescued from the alien bugbears who recently appeared from another dimension. During their time as prisoners, Aleena was hacked and tortured while the bugbears compromised her cysuit; she shuts her tech down and advises Dash to do the same, leaving her feeling invaded, powerless and vulnerable. Dash's vision is suffering and Catrina's kit is still missing.

On the upside, Sassy Snake got to have dinner with Father Crimbo.

With our second official mission, we're starting to really settle into Season three. Much like our second season had a different 'feel' than the first season of AIL, this one is unique from either of the first two seasons. Our remaining season 1 characters (Aleena, Dash, Catrina and Fahari, who debut in the Season two mission zero) are more in the background. Meanwhile, we've seen characters who were less active participating more (Sassy and Wildfall), while entirely new names like Mary Kate O'Toole, Blackeagle, Shelldor and Spaghettigirl are active in this mission and others. Oh, and Koumori makes an impressive debut this mission! Becky Joy and Cattaras Whiteclaw, who have been around AIL since the early days, are still generally going pretty strong, though.

AiL was conceived as a game for a clan in the Kingdom of Loathing game, KOKOL. That's why AIL is loosely based in AIL, and why AIL started off with KOKOL as the story focus in the beginning. It didn't last long, sadly. We later expanded the player clans with a short lived attempt to get another KOL clan, The Winking Judge, into AIL. Later, Catrina converted the Knob Goblins into our first (sort of) evil player faction the Feline Empire, first seen in the Season 2 finale. And finally, Konall Bearsmasher (KOKOL) and Sir Fumblies (Feline Empire) eventually left those factions to form a third faction, the Blood Clan.

But that's all Season one and two. Season three focuses a lot less on clans (aside from the KOKOL themed quest in the last mission and puts a lot more emphasis on our version of KOL's Council of Loathing, first met in AIL in Season one. With this mission, we take the long dormant Somber Six story and really start to focus on it, establishing Boss Bat and Baron von Ratsworth as the first two members.

Plus we debut Koumori, while Spaghettigirl finally makes her season 3 debut.

Although we chose to focus on the rats and bats for this mission, it isn't a split mission. Nevertheless, the players ended up falling into four different sections of the Finale, as you'll see, with three sections focusing rats or bats while Catrina, Dash and Aleena have an adventure that focuses on the alien bugbears and Black Paladin. It's a bit different to have a single-goal Finale where the players are spread out in different sections, which is partly why we introduce the reporters and scribes in the Finale.

So in that sense, maybe the style of Mission Finales are evolving with Season three as well . . .

Feature characters: Koumori takes the feature spot for both a very powerful (award winning) debut, which he followed it up with by meeting Mary Kate later on in a co-write that featured Wildfall (although he didn't meet Koumori in it). This is our first 'bat furry' type character - although he doesn't seem to be a "furry" in the traditional AIL sense. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding this character.
Co feature character: Mary Kate absolutely shines in our second mission, tossing out a pair of high quality solo roleplays while also taking part in co-writes with Shelldor, Wildfall, Blackeagle, Blackpaws and Fahari! Mary really starts to grow as an adventurer in this one and a few of her familiar NPC's return as well from the last mission.
Co feature character: Fahari returns in this one and kicks up a storm during her four co-writes here. It's the first time she's been in a Season 3 mission and she make the most of it. She even serves as 'love advisor' to Mary Kate at one point.
Sassy Snake scores seven sensational solos for the mission! We see her unsure if she wants the mission. Later, she sets out for revenge, although she still finds time to take on the role of mentor to Icy as well. Briefly goes by the name "Viper" during the mission.
Wildfall is injured during an attack from the bats and spends the rest of the mission trying to heal from it. He and Mary Kate get some solid bonding time, too.
Todd Blackpaws is his usual charming self, serving as advisor to Wildfall, acting as the voice of reason when needed, and generally being as charming and funny as ever.
Blackeagle unite! They confront Mary Kate and Wildfall but the four eventually work together, joining up with Todd and Mary as they go. Blackeagle also battle Black Cutler during this one.
Aleena is reeling from the loss of use of her cysuit but she is determined not to let it stop her! This is a colder, meaner Aleena as a result.
Catrina Whiteclaw is still searching for her kit, but she takes some time to resolve a disagreement with Aleena!
Shelldor is here along with Bob, who is furious over the kidnapped familiars - and vows to actually do something about it! Whoa!
Sebastian Dash plays the role of noble hero as always, but falls more into the background this time.
Spaghettigirl mostly deals with her familiar Bingo during this round. She's hanging out with Becky Joy!
Becky Joy rounds at the list, hanging with SGirl and generally being silly!

And featuring:

Gem (aka Jewel) and Mole: The two "street urchins" show up to offer to help Sassy Snake and company. They prove quite invaluable as allies and travelling companions. Things get complicated later on when they (and the rest of Sassy Snake's crew) run into Baron van Ratsworth's cousin, Ratso.

Omar and Naomi: Last mission, they were Mary Kate's guards, but this time, she sends them to help Bob out in rescuing kidnapped familiars, which leads them to meet Sassy Snake and some of her crew as well (again).

Miscellaneous: A balloon monkey, Belushi the Killer Bee, Bob, Bingo, Bristle, "Paid" Trish P. L. Cape, Dr. Phil "Ties" Cappa, Council member Cheatum, a cocoabo, the Council of Loathing, the Daily Deli's little Canadian owner, Darson, Council member Dewey, Alisha "TC" DiPrepp, Dottie, Bart Ender, flocks of penguins, a furry shopper, Goblina, Grelva, Captain Hortaio, Crystal Ice (formerly Caramel Ice), Shea "Ax" Joutred, Buana Katherine, a wet Knob Goblin brute, Linger (aka Bruiser), Wilton "Boring Dude 7/9" Madman, Meaty, Miss Merha, Carlo Penno, Pete, Spice Phipps, Pippin, Rascal the Rattler, the Rocks bar and inn barkeep, Seaside Town authorities, Serpentina, Drea Jo Set-Ahax, Mr SewRite, Chandler 'Expo' Sition, Bob's smiling rat, Bob's stabbat, Professor Thadious T. Thurgood (aka "Thur the thinker") and a weaponsmith.

Feature antagonists

Baron von Ratsworth: The Baron shows up here and there, establishing him personality during the last bit of the Finale.

Count von Ratsoni (Ratso): Boss Bat didn't really get much time to be developed during the mission despite being a main enemy. Meanwhile, the Baron's cousin (?) Ratso comes face to face with Sassy Snake and company twice (once during the Finale) and seems to know who Gem is as well.

And also: About a thousand bats, an alien bugbear, the Black Paladin, Black Paladin's war steed, the Boss Bat, dancing skeleton couples, hordes of bats, hordes of rats, hundreds of rats, Trinity member Jerome, Bob King, "Rat King" Herbert King, Knob Goblin Elite guards, the Knob's guards, a lone mage, the Muri-Dan, a Knob Goblin patrol, four possessed soup cans, Ratso's sixty or so rats, rats with wings, a Knob Goblin scout, Lord Spookyraven, a swarm of country bats (ya'all), thousands of rats, and an unnamed Trinity member.

Information
Rollover: Council matters Dash and Mary Kate no "Legitimate businesspenguin" Carlo Penno is alerted to several recent thefts and activities by the Rat King and Boss Bat. He meets with a lackey, Council member Cheatum, who gets the Council to send adventurers to deal with the rats and bats in a non lethal fashion.

Also in this Rollover: The Council announce awards for the last couple missions. We're introduced to Carlo's assistant Dottie and her daughter Pete.

Familiar Faces Mary Kate, Shelldor and Wildfall yes Bob is whining about having to fill out paperwork for his reward from the Council (a new familiar - a windup Jackass Plumber) when Mary yells at him to alert him to the Notice board about someone kidnapping arena Suzie's familiars. Bob is determined to stop him. Wildfall manages to tick off Mary and Shelldor the turtle. Mary and Wildfall set out to help Bart Enter, hoping to beat the worst of the falling rain.
Grass is Greener Mary Kate and Wildfall no Wildfall and Mary Kate skip through the Nearby Plains barefoot and discuss the situation in Degrassi as well as Mary's uncertainties over her abilities as a healer. Wildfall uses a little reverse psychology to convince her she's worrying over nothing. Then Wildfall finds out she is a lot faster than he realized!
"Do we really want to go on this mission?" Sassy Snake no Sassy Snake deals with a corrupt shopkeeper, buys berries from an old woman (later named Grelva), and has a discussion with Icy, Linger and Bristle about if they really want to take the mission. They don't really seem enthused about the idea.
The Degrassi meet Blackeagle, Fahari, Mary Kate, Todd and Wildfall no Blackeagle put in a lil work at "The Rocks Bar and Inn" and ask around about Gnollish professor Thurgood, who has recently had some of his research stolen. Blackeagle are a little suspicous when Wildfall and Mary Kate look around, and don't exactly get along with Wildfall, but they decide they're working on the same side and go about their separate ways. Then Wildfall and Mary Kate run into Todd Blackpaws and Fahari which gives Wildfall and Todd a chance to introduce Fahari to Mary Kate.
Sassy's new ring Sassy Snake no Sassy goes for a walk and ends up shopping again at Grelva's and offers her more than the asking price for some grackle pods. Unfortunately, that's when endless swarms of rats and bats attack the ladies! Sensing something's wrong, Linger rushes to Sassy's aid. Grelva passes away in her sleep but only after leaving Sassy a ring to remember her by. She also leaves behind a reason for Sassy to want to go after the rats and bats or whoever is behind the attack.
Mary Kate's Amazing First Solo Mary Kate Yes! After Todd and Fahari depart, Wildfall goes off to do his own thing. Mary Kate decides to look into some stolen security plans and then to head to a favorite spot of Captain Horatio's to see if he's on land. Fortunately, she runs (literally) into Naomi and Omar, two sailors who had joined her on her last adventure. They take her to the Captain. Upon hearing of her plans to investigate Herr Pretzel Nugget, Horatio forcibly insists she take Naomi and Omar to guard her. Mary Kate isn't happy about that and takes it out on the two, but Omar's cooler head prevails; they laugh it off and get down to the job at hand.
Battywompus Fahari, Mary Kate, Todd and Wildfall naw Wildfall gets attacked by a swarm of country bats! Rushing to help, Mary Kate leaves her companions behind. Thankfully, Todd Blackpaws and Fahari show up to help, soon joined by Naomi and Omar! While they battle the bats, Wildfall reluctantly accepts Mary's medical treatment.
Shinobi Koumori No A look into the mindset and regrets of AIL's newest addition, the bat furry known as Koumori.
The Fab Four Flight For Freedom Fahari, Mary Kate, Todd and Wildfall no Todd and Mary Kate have to convince Wildfall he's too hurt to keep fighting - and to convince Fahari not to rush to attack the Muri-Dan who they spotted with the bats in the distance.
Gem and the Mole-ograms Sassy Snake no As Sassy, Linger, Icy and Linger prepare to leave town, a couple "tiny street urchins" (Mole and Gem) ask to go with to help them with the vermin problem. Sassy isn't sure but the others advocate for the pair - and Mole and Gem prove their worth by helping the crew (except Linger) find better weapons for in-close fighting in a cave. They set forward for the Bat Hole, with Linger agreeing to guard the cave entrance so he doesn't have to go in the cave.
the love adviser(s) Fahari, Mary Kate, Todd and Wildfall no While they look for the deli (owned by a girl from Lil Canadia) to buy lunch at, Todd tries to keep Wildfall's mind off his injuries from the bats - and advises Wildfall he should act on his feelings (which he obviously has) for Mary. The two also joke about the popularity of the deli, with Todd saying "everyone wants a little Canadian."

Meanwhile, Mary confides her feelings for Wildfall to Fahari as the two shop for medical supplies for Wildfall. Fahari tells her only Wildfall can speak on his feelings - although she has a pretty good idea what those feelings are.

Later, Mary treats Wildfall, who reminds her she needs to eat. She starts with dessert.

A six pack of trouble (troobel?) Sassy Snake no Sassy and the others (Linger, Bris, Icy and now Gem & Mole) hear thousands of rats, who they are convinced are following them. They retreat to "rocky country," wherever that is, and make camp. Later, Sassy is reunited with snake friends Serpintina and Rascal the rattler. Later, after seeing a large rat carrying a white flag, Sassy and company make plans for his imminent arrival.
A chitchat with a Fat Rat Sassy Snake no Camp Sassy gets a visit from Baron Von Ratsoni, aka Ratso, who claims to be Baron Von Ratsworth's cousin. He also denies that the rats (at least his rats) were a part of the attack that killed Grelva and asks to talk to the leader, saying the Rat King is getting a lot of blame for things he wasn't involved in. To protect the others, Mole pretends to be leader and lists off fake names for the others. When Ratso leaves, Sassy and company have to make a decision. Ultimately, they let an unarmed Mole go to meet the Baron in person. (It's obvious Rat King knows who Gem is.) During the night, an obviously concerned Gem vanishes into the night, worrying the others more.
Bat spit crazy. Koumori, Mary Kate and Wildfall no Mary Kate convinces a reluctant Wildfall (who is anxious to get out to find clues on what's going on with the rats and bats) that he needs more rest. She later spots a terrified bat creature, Koumori, hiding in the shadows, suffering from an injured wing. Sensing it's no ordinary bat and that he might be intelligent and is clearly starving, Mary bares her arm after accidentally cutting it open on a rock when Koumori tried to push past her. Koumori feeds on her but stops short of doing any damage. While it retreats into the shadows, Mary realizes the bat saliva had dulled her pain and takes some to Wildfall. Although reluctant, he allows her to use it to treat his arm. While Wildfall rests, Mary decides to watch over him and read a little.
(Gem) A Gem of a Precious Story Sassy Snake no Gem confronts the dishonest salesman from Sassy's earlier story. Turns out his name is Herbert King, but kids used to call him "Rat King" for his business practices, even back then. Gem accuses him of being behind Gelva's death, as he's since taken over her stand. When Gem starts to make a scene, King's brother pulls out a gun on Gem. Thankfully, Bristle (who had earlier been sent to check on her) arrives just in time to take the would-be shooter down. They call the local guards and Rat King is hauled off. Gem realizes she needs to stay behind to see this story through.
Mary Kate's Shopping Trip Mary Kate no On her way to get a special gift for Wildfall, Mary Kate again runs into (not literally this time) Omar and Naomi. Mary later talks Captain Horatio into sending Omar and Naomi on an assignment to help Bob find the location of Arena Suzie's missing familiars. The Captain has some gifts for Mary - lion skins, blanket-weight cloth and a silk-like material. Mary later talks to tailor Mr. SewRite about converting them into an outfit for Wildfall.
How to Become a Doser in Three Not-so-easy steps! Sassy Snake no Sassy agrees to train Icy in the ways of healing but only after Sassy is sure that Icy is ready to completely commit to it. They and Linger head to Sassy's secret garden. With Linger standing guard, Sassy presents Icy some gifts, including a crystal dagger that is meant to never be used as a weapon. Icy passes tests involving firebrand berries and the dangerous throcklefruits. Icy is then presented with a timed challenge involving berries, nuts and stones. Sassy presents her with a necklace, the title of Doser, and the new name of Crystal Ice.

Also, Sassy reconsiders if going to fight the bats in their cave is really the right move but still heads for the Typical Tavern with Linger and Icy to look for Mole.

When Bats and Rats attack Blackeagle, Mary Kate and Wildfall no John and Sherri (Blackeagle) meet with Professor Thurgood to learn about the thefts of his research paper and it seems obvious that the rats and bats are behind it. Elsewhere, Wildfall wants to go with Mary, but she wants him to stay home. He agrees when he hears she's heading out to get a surprise gift for Wildfall. Meanwhile, Blackeagle come under a massive attack from the rats and bats, but Wildfall offers them sanctuary in the hotel room he's sharing with Mary. Blackeagle suggest that maybe someone is controlling the bats. Mary later returns after her solo shopping trip and fights off a stray bat. The four agree that maybe Todd Blackpaws and Fahari could help them with this strange mystery.
Catrina/ Dash/ Aleena: Dramatic title here!! Aleena, Catrina and Dash none When Boss Bat and the Muri-Dan launch an attack on Forest Village, Dash, Catrina and Aleena are there to thwart it! A flashback establishes that Aleena plans to press on in spite of her cysuit becoming compromised and unusable, as Dash does in spite of lingering vision problems. Catrina challenges Aleena to friendly but tense competition to prove that Aleena can handle herself with a cysuit as well as Catrina can without using her swords or claws. Back during the attack, Catrina corners a Muri-Dan, who is forced to admit the Black Paladin might have information on the Somber Six- and on where Catrina's kit might be.
I smell a bat Shelldor no Shelldor and Bob find the kidnapped familiars in the bat hole, rescue them, and make their way through an underground cave to the basement of the Typical Tavern.
SGirl and Becky: We can haz a shoppin trip, too! Becky Joy and Spaghettigirl no Spaghettigirl (with her purse rat familiar Pippin), Darson, Goblina, and Becky Joy are shopping around when SGirl goes into "R U Catgirl?", unaware that it's store for furries and not a store that sells fur clothing. SGirl's obtuse angel Bingo tries to pull a prank involving pots of rainwater, but thanks to Pippin's yapping, it backfires. That's where SGirl and Becky run into their former mentor, Miss Mertha, who tells them of rumors of the rats and bats having a plan to revive Lord Spookyraven, which Becky and SGirl vow to stop.
The Finale: Prelude Aleena, Catrina, Dash and Mary Kate no A couple of flashbacks establish the Council are getting overwhelmed by all the activity lately- and they want to establish something to help keep it all straight!

Back in present, Aleena, Catrina and Dash are outside of The Knob, ready to infiltrate in search of the Black Paladin. Dash protests Aleena's use of lethal force. Mary Kate and Wildfall solicit Captain Horatio's advice on how to deal with the bats. Mary doesn't want to kill the bats off and again wonders if someone might be controlling them. The Council's plan (send out reporters to cover ongoing events in the Loathing Kingdom) starts to unfold with reporter Chandler Sition and his cousin, Alisha DiPrepp. Mary Kate and Wildfall talk to Fahari and Blackpaws, who offer their opinions and help on the rats & bats situation.

The Finale Part 1 of 2 Aleena, Dash, Mary Kate and Spaghettigirl kinda Sherri Dunn (1/2 of Blackeagle) talks to Captain Horatio, Fahari and Blackpaws as she tries to track down Wildfall and Mary. After, Fahari decides to find Mary to offer help. Dash, Cat and Aleena start to work their way into the Knob stronghold with Catrina leading. SGirl, Becky, Darson and Goblina chase down Bingo who is trying to chase a bat. Luckily, this leads them to bump into SGirl's clannie Meaty, who helps SGirl find the key to the mansion! Linger, Sassy and Icy encounter more rats on their way to the Typical Tavern and Sassy finds a tree nut which she has Icy keep. At the Tavern, they run into Naomi, Omar, Bob and Shelldor. In Seaside town, Gem is upset the Rat King might get off the hook for Grelva's murder. She solicits a reluctant Bristle to help. Catrina's trio run into reporter Drea and her scribe Trish. Elsewhere, Mary Kate runs into Todd and Fahari. They overhear something about a meeting between the Boss Bat and an alien bugbear. Finally, Fahari and Sherri rush to help Todd and Mary Kate in a fight against thugs. Koumori's there too.
The Finale part 2 of 2 Dash and Mary Kate N/A The Council has sent out reporters and scribes in pairs to gather the five best stories in the Loathing Kingdom, which are presented throughout the last part of the Mission Finale!

While Dash holds off the guards, Catrina and Aleena work together to put the Black Paladin on the defense, but an alien bugbear appears in the distance. . . and Catrina notices her son's scent on it! She rushes it, and the two vanish in a light, allowing Paladin to stun Aleena! Gem and Bristle's search for the Rat King takes them to the mansion, but they can't get in without a key. Luckily, Spaghettigirl shows up with the key, plus Goblina, Darson, and two of SGirl's familiars. They make their way through the mansion to the second floor just in time to intervene with the attempts to revive Lord Spookyraven, but a sole mage finishes the ceremony to revive the Lord, forcing our heroes to flee the mansion!

Elsewhere, Linger, Bob, Sassy, Omar and the others bond over storytelling when Ratso bursts in with two beefy Muri-Dan bodyguards and holding Mole prisoner! Linger goes to squish Ratso but the two guards attack Linger and battle the other adventurers! However, the tide turns when Jerome and another Trinity member show up and push Sassy down before vanishing from the scene along with Mole and Ratso. Finally, Fahari, Todd, Wildfall and Mary follow the Boss Bat and come up with a clever plan to ambush them just outside Distant Woods. It involves Todd's singing, Mary Kate's dancing and Wildfall's sarcastic commentary. Blackeagle create a distraction to allow their group to get the drop on Boss Bat's crew. Mary goes after Baron Von Ratsworth but gets in trouble taking on the rats. Blackeagle again battle Black Cutler and get the advantage until Mimi shows up with alien electric gauntlets. Mimi uses the gauntlets to drop John and almost fries Sherri, but Koumori shows up at the last minute to help, causing the device to overload and taking all five out of the fight.

Convinced Mary Kate can't handle the Baron yet, Wildfall browbeats her into letting Wildfall handle this fight, but Wildfall quickly finds himself in trouble! Will Mary be able to deal with her self doubts in time to come to Wildfall's aid? Fahari and Todd are nowhere to be seen at the end of it.
